So there's a good chance that I won't be getting severance if I work 11.5 months for my next contract. Which means that I might as well leave this contract early and lose severance this year and move from my current smaller city to Busan or Seoul.

I'm currently at a public elementary school and I love it. However, a change of scenery is in the cards and I'd like to to Busan or Seoul. The problem is that I've got a great apartment where I am and don't really want to do luck-of-the-draw location and apartment with a new school.

Is it a good idea to visit individual schools in Busan and Seoul and drop off my resume and meet the staff? It would allow me to choose precisely which schools I'd be willing to work at, plus it would save them the recruiter fee and get to meet me in person before hiring someone. I'm a good teacher who cleans up pretty well so I can make a great first impression.

Secondly, is it too late for this? Have positions already been filled? I didn't mean to do this late but I thought my severance thing was taken care of but I was mistaken.

Thirdly, if I sign a contract with my current school tomorrow can I get out of it in a few weeks? Or should I put off signing it until I'm 100% sure. The contract term starts in late September, but I'm not sure of penalties before then.

Thanks all for any advice.

Update: definitely not getting severance for next contract so I'm looking to switch. I've got approval from my co-teacher and my school.

If I went to Busan would I contact EPIK about doing the transfer? Can I break my contract early (with 30 days notice and school's permission) to do this? Would my MOE block it and not give a LOR?

For your own personal work history, it would be better to complete your current contract before moving on. Having one successful, completed contract on your resume will help you more in the future. If you leave this contract early, even if it's amicable and according to the contract, you will still have some people who will reject you based on your failure to finish what you agreed to.

If you have to leave your next job early for some reason, at least you will have that reason as an explanation and one completed contract prior to show that you are a good employee.

The school has given him permission to leave, he'd be silly not to take it and go. It sounds like he's already completed a year with this school anyway what with talking about signing a contract for the new term and all.

Actually, it sounds like he has decided not to finish his current year, because he thinks he will only have 11 1/2 months for his next job. He wants to have 12 months for the next one, so he's quitting this one early. So, he'll leave early, with permission, give up his airfare and severance for this year because he will be leaving this current job 30 days short of a year, in hopes of completing the next contract that he hasn't started yet and getting the same benefits then, 12 months after he could have already had them:

This is why it seems like a bad idea. 30 days more means a completed contract and all the cash. He's taking a risk on what's behind door number 2 knowing that it can't be better than what he has now and that he could lose out on both.
