As one example of my point, My friend was buying a laptop in Yongsan t'other day, and aside from how we managed to haggle it down 100,000won, he also offered a cracked version of microsoft office 2007 for a small fee.

Is it going too far to say that the Korean economy is at least partly dependent on stealing software?

Hah. Well my friend is fluent in Korean, and I think the novelty of a fluent foreigner was a bonus. He haggled his way to make the seller speak to his manager who ended up agreeing, having watched the whole affair in the background.

It's in the big techno mart place in Yongsan, I can't really tell you more than that but we got a 990k laptop for 850k (so over 100k) after a good 10 minutes. Yongsan. Endless laptops and desktops. We went for HP pavillion.

(sorry if the confusion was that the laptop was haggled down to a price of 100,000, my lack of detail to blame)

A laptop in Insadong? I suppose it was a Korean traditional laptop?

Yeah I need to edit that to Yongsan, I went to Insadong afterwards to go to a musical equivalent of the same thing, a giant room full of hundreds of stores covering different aspects of music. Yongsan.

I got a laptop at Yongsan's technomart 2 months ago...

I took a Korean friend with me (for better bargaining power) and I got a free (legit) upgrade to windows 7 dvd (that uses legit updates off the internet to assist in upgrading the hardware from the windows website)

I also got a great deal on the hp pavillion entertainment laptop 13"...I got a free mouse, 4 way usb hub, laptop sleeve/pouch (was offered a bag but requested a sleeve) free upgrade to 4gb ram from the standard 1gb of ram and a bunch of other stuff....

we also got it for just under 1 mill....well worth it imo.....I wanted to go for a good brand, and I can get reliable a/s worldwide too...
