I was wondering what a good online course is to take while I'm searching for my first teaching job?

Would it help my chances at all? I'm looking for private school/hagwon jobs mostly.

so far I know of the online Tefl website: http://www.teflonline.com./

I did mine with LinguaEdge and thought that was pretty good.

As far as usefulness for jobs goes, I reckon it will definitely give you some edge over any newbies who don't have any qualifications or experience. It just depends on how much. There are quite a few people who do online certificates now, so there will likely be a few other similarly qualified candidates competing for the same job. Nevertheless, if you do get it, at least you'll know you're not going to be missing out because you haven't got a certificate and others do. Also, a certificate is great for giving you an idea of what's coming, so I think it's a good thing to do one.

I'm in the same position you are. TEFL Online looks good. ITTT is cheaper. http://www.tesolcourse.com/tesol-course-prices.php. Both seem respected.

I've been told that most schools don't care which program you go through as long as it's at least 100 hours.

For those who already have taken the courses/have jobs already, do you think it matters whether you do a 100 hour course vs a 120 hour (supposedly advanced) course? From everything I've read it sounds like Koreans don't really know the difference between many of the Western tefl/tesol/celta programs, so I'm wondering if it even matters whether I have an 'advanced' certification or not.

Nope it won't matter....anything 100 hours plus is recognised and they won't give you any more recognition for the 120 hour than they would the 100 hour course.

The advanced 120 hours course - are you talking about Global TESOL College? Cux that's what I took.

Do yourself a favor, save money and just go with ITTT 100hr & no tutor. The course is just as good as the other online ones, and it is quite a bit cheaper. In the end it will yield the same results (potential pay bump, equal recognition in Korea). Plus, you can do it as fast as you want.

"Cost for our 100-hour online TEFL Certification Course without Tutor Support: US$ 190"

Plus, you can knock $20 off of that to make it $170. Nearly half the price of others, same recognition. Hmm... think about it. Laughing If you want the $20 off, here's the direct coupon code link: http://coursepayment.com/footprints170

Otherwise, you can pay the full $190 and sign up for it the regular way here: http://www.teflonline.net/courses/tutor.html

Once you pay, the next day you'll get a boatload of emails with attachments. That's your entire course. Just chug along and when you're ready, ask for the final. Once you login to download the final you have 24 hours to complete it and email it back. It's really not that bad!

Hey,

I just submitted an order for the $170 link, but I got no receipt emailed to me. I called them and gave my order no. and email, and they said they had no record of it.

Is this normal?

I would double check with your credit card company (assuming that's what you used to pay) to confirm there was a purchase put on it. Otherwise there may have been a glitch and your order might not have gone through.

If you went through footprints/ITTT then if you were charged, I'm sure they will either give you your money back or send you a the courses. They are a reputable company.

Hi. Maybe I can help.

I received a receipt invoice with reference number, account number and all of that. I can't remember if I got it instantly or not. I can tell you that when I did get it, I simultaneously received an email from ITTT thanking me for my purchase-- so I got two receipts, in essence.

I'm not sure who you called, but Plimus Sales processes the order on behalf of ITTT. So if you called ITTT, it is likely they may not know something if they haven't received word from Plimus of your payment.

I recommend you contact Plimus, here is their buyers support page: http://home.plimus.com/ecommerce/buyers/buyers-support and you can also try the email address [email protected]

Use that page to find your reference number if you can, and proceed from there as needed to pull up a receipt/invoice.

You can contact ITTT at [email protected] if you need, but it sounds like an issue with Plimus (the people who process the orders). You can also email [email protected] -- he's the guy who runs ITTT.

If I were you, I'd go to http://home.plimus.com/ecommerce/buyers/buyers-support and try to find my order information.

I did the ITTT course after working for two years. It bumped me up a lot in pay and took less than ten hours. I had already started work on my masters, so I really got nothing out of it, but I think if you have no experience it might be a bit useful. The pay bump in PS positions makes it well worth the cost.

Anyone know if TEFL certificates earn a pay bump for private school jobs?

I think the answer is - not exactly.

Public schools have salary grades, and the requirements include things like ESL certification, experience, degree, etc.

Private language schools have no such thing. One school might offer you 2.2, and another school might offer you 2.3. One school might have a range of 2.2-2.4 and because you have ESL certification, maybe they give you a little bit more money. On the other hand, maybe they give you 2.2 and the very reason you got the job over somebody else was, everything else being equal, you had ESL certification and they didn't.

So it isn't cut and dry.

One thing is for sure though, and that is more and more people are applying and looking to go overseas to teach. Thus, the more experience and qualifications that you get, the better you are able to compete, and I think TEFL is a good idea.
