| I've tried ordering online from either Canadian and American sites. But they keep blocking me by refusing to ship to Korea. Funny, I always thought money was money. Strange that these companies don't like money. I ask around at shops here and no one sells it. Figuring Korea wants to open up to the world, trade with other countries, and has a large expat population, they should sell the software here. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. If it's possible to buy it here and anyone knows, please let me know. |

| If it's so difficult to find in Korea then just download for free.....that's what Microsoft must expect if their product is not easily available in a certain country. |

or buy it illegally here... I'm sure some store in Itaewon, aka The Forbidden Land, has some....
ya could just send a copy to a friend or relative back home, and have them send to you, but maybe that's what they want you to think!  |

If you really want to buy a legit copy then go to the microsoft store in the terminal building at Yongsan (same floor as the pedway over the railroad tracks.)
Go in the door and it is straight ahead on your right hand side (2nd last along the wall going in).

I'm sure that was the Beta that will brick in the near future.
OP, you can buy directly from the microsoft.com website. It's available as a digital download and you can then install it on your PC. That's the easiest way.
Also, I put a post in the tech forum about technet, a program where you can get any bit of MS software (up to 10 licenses per version) and it's completely legit. It's $200 for a year, but the licenses never expire. I got it and I love having access to all that software at will. |

I've run into problems using Openoffice. If someone sends me a document in MS Word I can't open it with Openoffice and vice versa. I have tried to send resumes and other documents in Openoffice and either it won't open or just comes out gibberish or if they can open it, the formatting is all screwed up. |

Open office sucks. use if it you care about being a free software linux open source fanboy advocate. stick to Microsoft Word if you actually want your word processor to work properly and your documents to be compatible with the 99% of the rest of the world.
and OP, this is 2010. I'm sure you can buy and download a copy off of Microsoft's website. |

| Even if you buy the "Korean" version - it will ask you when you download what language you want it in...choose English and voila! You're done. |

are you sure it's not you instead of the computer? I've written many things using it and no one has had a problem opening. even used it for my last resumer! 
You do have to remember to change what file format it's saved in... but for keeping the MS monster at bay a while longer, it does in a pinch.
Of course, if you have an employer with MS and are willing to finangle with it, all the better.  |

Regarding OpenOffice, I find it does a very good emulation of MS Office 2003 (my favourite version) but I do need Outlook so I always have MS Office on my computers. I do use OO to compensate for programs that are too expensive or too rarely used to pay MS for, in my case Access. And you can selectively install OO components.

I once bought a legal copy of MS Office (Small Business Edition I believe) through the trial version you nowadays seem to get with every new computer. That cost real money (and still not cheap) and two years later, I found myself unable to use the serial provided and the downloaded installer file (maybe because I moved from Bangkok to Seoul?).
Anyway, that and the inability to choose which MS Store to buy my software in, and regional restrictions (that warning on certain boxes, "can only be installed in SE Asia region" for example) have put me back on the "free M$" track, even though I'd happily pay for upgrades to Office and (ahem) Vista.

Maybe it's been a while since you used it and they fixed it? My work computer has korean office, so i don't use it. My co-teacher and i swap documents all the time: I'm using Open Office and she is using Korean Microsoft Office. No formatting issues at all. |
