Hello, I am a UK citizen living in the Philippines with my wife and kids. I am 60 years old now. I want some feedback concerning my past criminal record. I realise there must be a criminal check produced, but the offences were done from when I was 15 until 26. These offences are "dead" in the eyes of the judicial system in the UK. Will it go against me now in finding a teaching position? Will it also cause problems in gaining an E 2 visa.

There is only one way, no matter what *ANYONE* on this board says, to be 100% sure: Order a CRC on yourself and read it.

get your criminal background check, and if there's any marks on it you most likely will not be able to find a job in Korea teaching English.

Does it secure your job for a longer period of time by telling him that? Razz

I have no idea what you mean by that.

The reality of it is that if you have any marks on your record you probably won't be able to find a job teaching in Korea.

Well fair dues to you! Many a man might just retire at your age instead of pursuing work at the ripe old age of 60!

Your offences were so long ago that they may be considered "spent" by the authorities and hopefully won't show up.

TBH though you will struggle to find work here because of your age perhaps but doesn't hurt to try.

By the way omit any mention of you living in the Philippines in your application. We had a guy on here a few months ago complaining he was getting rejected and rejected. IMO it was because he kept going on about how he was living in the Philippines on his covering letter.

You know exactly what I mean by that. It's scare tactics. The guy will be able to find work despite your attempts to keep him from even giving it a shot.

Get a copy of the CRC.

IF there is ANYTHING on it you will be denied a visa as a matter of policy by the immigration authorities in Korea.

IF you can have it expunged then do so and try again.

You will also face problems because of your age.

The other options are:
a) Korean hakwon in the Philippines (I assume you have a 13a so you can work).

b) pick another country that does not require a background check for the visa application process.

.

Have your record expunged. In the USA you have to apply for it. I'm sure its the same with Britian. Just do it and you'll have no record, end of sentence, end of story.

assuming you can get your record cleared (if anything shows up, that is), you might look into taking a CELTA class over in Vietnam and teaching there.

I know someone who did exactly that, at age 60, and is now living and teaching there (actually he would be 62 now). the salaries are comparable to Korea and IMO, the area is more exciting and exotic. the weather is warmer, of course, and maybe a bit harsher in some regards (more crime in the cities) but overall, age was not as nearly as limiting a factor as it is in Korea and Japan.

The latest on Vietnam is that they are cracking down big time on foreigners. They are going through a transition like Korea did a couple of years ago and kicking out all the unqualified and criminal teachers.

For Vietnam you need a criminal record check (apostilated) exactly the same way as in Korea.

Check out the Vietnam boards for what's going on there.

I've met a few people that have had crimnal records and still got their visa. I'd say submit your documents anyways and see what happens. It all comes down to who reviews your application and how hard that school, or school board, goes to convince immigration that you aren't a problem.
