|
|
I have to teach a week of science camp and need to come up with 20 lesson plans. I have a few ideas, but was hoping that some of you (who may or may not have had to do the same thing) might have some input. All suggestions are welcome!
Thanks |

Mentos and diet coke kills.
Just do lots of little mini experiments. Look up "Science for kids" or some such on google.
You wouldn't want to do experiments every class, though. Do some science based activities. Watch Planet Earth or some other nature doco. Word klozes and that stuff. |

kids enjoy any "space" lessons, as they already know something about them...
also, "time" (meaning future)... i did this and we made a cheap time capsule from a tupperware box... we did it up next week...
also, check out bill nye the science guy vids for an easy lesson plan. for example, watch two 20 minute vids and have the kids complete a venn diagram comparing... for say, electricty compared to static electricity...
writing activities are always cool with science because you can give them creative topics like invent a new steam powered machine, or what would happen today if there was no more electricity...
good luck |

what's grade (age) level?
1. light spectrum - use a prism or a diffraction grating to split a beam a white light into the color spectrum, use a thermometre to demonstrate infrared
2. gravitational constant - there are a lot of things you could do and maybe even several classes, first demonstrate that gravity is independant of mass you need some objects to drop, a place from which to drop them, and a stop watch, then do an experiment to calculate the constant on Earth.
3. projectiles
4. magnetism - build a 'Gauss gun' using some magnets and ball bearings
5. astronomy - just do a lesson on the solar system
6. microscopes - if you can get a hold of some, then have the kids look a various crap through them plant cells, seoul's dirty water, saliva, blood, etc...
7. flight - get the kids to try and build gliders
8. architechure - get the kids to build bridges out of popsicle sticks and glue, then test how strong they are
oh I could go on forever |

Egg drop.
Divide the kids into groups and have them make some contraption that will protect an egg from breaking when it's dropped off the roof (or out a 2nd/3rd story window).
Give them cardboard, wodden chopsticks, balloons, tape, straws, cups, bowls, plastic bags, any sort of trash. Should kill a lot of time. |

Depends on age but the Magic School Bus videos are nice to use.
The most over-used project: make a volcano.
We made catapults in high school, don't know the age group though.
Make paper airplanes.
I second the egg drop and build a bridge/tests its strength.
Anything with magnets will kill as well.
What age group? |

They're Middle school 1 and 2, but almost fluent. They are only putting the "gifted" students in the science program and a lot of them have lived overseas before so I really don't have to worry about language. Lucky me though, because if I did, 20 lessons would seem like a nightmare! (well more than it already does anyway).
Thanks so much for all of your ideas guys! |
