Agreed.

However you would then also have to agree than some western teachers here are a joke as well.

Absolutely...but we're not talking about them. Of course I can see both sides, and that we all suck.. but do we always have to go through this PC, be fair performance with every post... as soon as i say one thing, someone will say the opposite.. I believe both viewpoints most of the time.
I mean wouldn't life be dull if every post was like this:

"(some) korean co-workers (can, on occasion) suck at doing their jobs (but not all, westerners can be the same.) They sometimes sleep through their duties (But so do westerners, to be fair). I work with one who routinely tries to make me look bad (but maybe she was just having a bad day, I once knew a westerner who did that as well). Generally speaking (but there are many exceptions, maybe its just my perspective) korean teachers hate us waeguks ( although I realise many people disagree with me).

hows that for an innofensive post?

Rapier,

No need for an extensive post.

Its all good....you can indeed see both sides....you just choose not to discuss one side and to focus on another.

No worries. Very Happy

Sometimes I love korea because it is not so PC. I hate people who take no position on anything. Just say what you think and let the chips fall where they may.

Once i was in korea and I met an African (maybe part Native) Canadian woman who was a Quebec French Nationalist and couldn't walk in a normal fashion. In Canada she is queen and can have anything she wants because of PC.......in Korea she was the same as me (a teacher).

I am friends with a Korean couple, lovely people. The guy spent 6 months in Australia although granted his english was basically non-existent before he went.
They are both english teachers now. The other he phones me up and says "Hi, I am Jon". Ok, I know that. "I'm in the Seoul".

Is there any kind of test teachers have to take to become an english teacher here? It might help weed out some of the useless ones.

I mean an english level test, nothing else.

Yeah this is a good point. I am guessing that the ads the hogwans put out in the locals specify they need someone who can see, walk and make audible sounds through the opening in their face.

Seriously tho, before I get in more trouble, the interview procedure at my Hogwan, as far as I can see involves a quick chat over a cup of coffee and then a yes or no. We had a candidate for new english teacher the other day, but the director decided against her as he thought she was 'stupid'. There should be some form of basic test - think how important a good TOIEC score is - do you even need that for a teaching job?!

My co-teachers use me as sort of a live "Tape Recorder."

They have too much in their lessons to give me much time, so I respect that it is their class, and basically do as told.

They have been nice to me so far.

People who accuse other people of being gay are usually covering up for theirown latent homosexual tendencies.
The answer I am neither, I am in fact a redneck from Virginny.
Here's our State song:
Carry Me back to Old Virginny
Written by James Bland

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where the old darke'ys heart am long'd to go,
There's where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.

CHORUS

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live 'till I wither and decay,
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
There's where this old darke'ys life will pass away.
Massa and missis have long gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore,
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.

The tone of the place is determined/set by the boss. The boss at the hagwon I'm currently at is cool, travelled, understands foreigners well and their ways, is always joking and courteous and upbeat. So the Korean teachers (mostly female) take the lead, I suppose, and have no issues re; foreigners. That said, though, I'm lately wondering about, and rather in awe of, the 'importance of looking good in Korea'. Because some of the Korean female teachers seem to have been hired on the basis of looks; 'are they pretty'. But hey, they ARE pretty because they have worked at becoming that, drilled with the importance of looks from day one in their life in Korea. And if they mutter disparagingly about me, the foreign teacher, it's about how I look MOST of the time. Like overweight here, and there, and from this or that angle, blar blar blar. It's rather hilarious. And amounts to not much!
There are no 'I don't speak with foreigners' type Korean teachers at this school, though I've experienced working with such and Rapier is right, they exist! And live in an evil world all their own filled with bad thoughts! Laughing
