I have been here just a few weeks and was wondering if anyone could give a heads up on some decent places to go in Deagu without having to go to the club district. I have been to the college district a few times and it's been really dead. Not really into the clubs that much, I'm looking for more of a bar to hang out and socialize if there is such thing in Korea. |

The university districts aren't too bad. Keimyung is much better than Kyungpook in my opinion. A lot busier and more variety. That said, neither are too exciting (as you noted) even on the weekend.
Downtown, there are a variety of spots, but it will depend on what you're into. There are the foreigner spots: Communes, Thursday Party, GoGo Vinyl, Ping, Who's Bob, etc etc. Although I've noticed that a lot of them have kind of died down.
There are also a few cafes that have beer/wine that are a nice change from the bars. There's a street with cafes just off to the right of Samdeok So Bang Seo. A couple of them are open lateish (2AM~) and serve alcohol. One in particular has a great patio and a rooftop loft kinda thing. I want to say it's called Design Factory, but I'm not positive. Dos Tartes across from GoGo (I think) is also nice to grab a beer or coffee. They have a nice courtyard with a pretty big screen where they show DVDs at night. Laid back and not too loud.
There are also a ton of Korean spots, but they aren't spots you really go on your lonesome.
And there are two shisha/hookah spots. Not exactly a place you would hang out for hours, but if you like shisha it's nice to grab a drink and smoke. |

I guess perhaps any expat joints outside of Seoul and Busan don't last long, eh? |

Sadly there aren't alot of options. The best place that existed in Daegu which sounds exactly like what you are looking for (Ariana Brau) turned into a Korean nightclub and while still having some of the same beer is a shell of what it used to be.
Not sure what part of Daegu you are in, but there is a new "sports bar" that opened a few weeks ago in Siji.(right next to Sawol station beside Daegu bank) As far as I know, its the only sports bar in Daegu. the name of the place is "Hey Man". When I first saw their advertisement outside and went into the place, I was impressed. It is a bit small, but full or large televisions all around. When I spoke to the owner, who is Korean but speaks very good English, he said he had no plans on getting a satellite to broadcast such events at the UFC coming this weekend (though he may have changed his mind after I let him know that many foreigners are always looking for a place to watch it) On that particular day was showing NBA games. I suppose it might be a decent place to watch the World Cup if that is your thing and can get a seat in the place.
Everything on the menu is a bit more expensive that your usual hof place, and no chicken wings (bummer) but they do have Hogarden beer on draft if you are willing to shell out 22,000 won for a 1750 pitcher. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll look for some of the places you all have mentioned. I live close to the airport, so the college district is pretty close. the sports bar sounds cool, a little pricey on the beer, but cool. Most of the nights I have gone out here I have dropped around 100,000 on a meal and drinks, is that about the norm or am I spending more than I should? I am not really sure at this point how much everything here costs. Seems like meals runs around 12,000-18,000 & drinks at most bars around 5,000-8,000..... |

Been to HeyMan about 10 times...meh, not much of a bar for meeting people (westerners). I mentioned to him as well about the NHL and NFL package and he blew that idea off. Interesting sports bar. Keep hitting those spots/bars mentioned above and you should do alright. Also try the Holy Grill bar downtown for a pint. Owners are nice guys and tend to have a game on the screen. The key as well is meeting folks in your hood who go for a local beer. Cheap and easy.
Happy hunting |

The bar owner sounds like a cheapskate, his joint probably has no right calling itself a sports bar. |

What do you mean by this? That they aren't safe or just no English speaking?[/quote] |

I think what that poster probably meant is that it's different than a "foreigner" bar here, where it's not THAT unusual for someone to be having a beer and burger by themselves. Most Korean style places don't really cater to the loner...if you try to mingle, you will have limited success. The std Korean nightclub is actually quite similar...most of the patrons arrived there with their friends, and besides an occasional flirtatious "booking", will likely want to not be hit on by someone who's used to Les Foufounes Electriques... |

It depends what you're after. There are lots of nice little places to discover for a quiet pint and good atmosphere. The beer in Billibowl is horrendous but its good for pool and darts. The beer in Miller Time is good but its always dead. I used to go to Communes a while back but unless there is a band on its just depressing.
The only good thing about the Holy Grill is the name.
Personally I would avoid Who's Bob and Thursday party, unless you're attracted to loud, obnoxious bottom-feeders.
Just my opinion. |

There's a nice little Australian pub near the east gate of Keimyung campus called Sydney Street, which gets quite a few foreign students and professors on a Friday night. But you might tell the thread where in Daegu you are living. |

Only went to Daegu once, so my opinion is worth what it's worth:
Thursday Party: Too many military dudes (of the rowdy variety) for my tastes, but quite lively if you like the club scene thing.
Guess Bar: Great for live music, if you like that sort of thing.
Commune: My favorite joint in Daegu (of those I know). Vinyl platters and new wave played at conversation-friendly levels. The owner knows what I like (musically and libation-wise) and keeps it served up fresh.
Those are all in the same area downtown, which may be the place you were trying to avoid. Don't know the city well, but that's a little insight from a guy from outta town. |
