Next week is our last week before vacation, and my sixth graders are done all their lessons, I want to reward both them and myself by showing them a movie but we only have one 40 minute period. Anyone have any short film suggestions for that age group? Maybe a cartoon or something?

I've had a lot of fun with the following:

1. Sift through a listof Academy Award winners for Best Animated Short (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Animated_Short_Film) and start looking for them on YouTube. Most of them are there, but you will immediately be sucked into a vortex of "Oh that looks cute" from which you will emerge hours later. They're generally cute and very clever and have minimal dialogue. Most of them range from about 2 to 10 minutes but you can set them up with a little project like drawing cartoons or writing a little story or something. Generally speaking I get the impression that my students enjoy this more than staring at a tv the whole time.

2. You'll find something hilarious and adorable on YouTube, but if you want to check out something else, go to http://www.vimeo.com/ which was made by and for independent filmmakers. You must -- and I cannot stress this enough -- watch everything ALL THE WAY THROUGH, or else get ready to shock the ModEdit out of your students and explain why what they just saw is actually "art".

3. You can also visit the sites of film schools and the surpisingly innovative and hilarious animated shorts produced by students desperate to have someone watch their work. This might be more suited to long days of deskwarming since you will have to do a lot of digging and, again, watching everything all the way through.

4. If you really just want to relax and don't feel like making a production out of it (and I don't blame you), a couple episodes of Spongebob never fails.

For grade 6, I'd start with Where the hell is Matt / then Lily the Geography whiz / Then Hey Jude Kid / Then A Korean Love Story or Lemon Tree by a Korean grade 6 class. Finish off with some Wallace and Gromit from our Wallace and Gromit player.

One of my classes I did with 6th graders around exam time last year was a 'scavenger hunt' .. although because it was during class time - there were very STRICT rules about making noise - and teams (of 3) would be disqualified if they did - that might disrupt other classes.

In teams of 3 .. one person with a mb phone ... groups would be given something to go and find .... take a photo of it, come back, report to me with the photo - and set off with another object to find.
Sometimes it was just them having to do an imitation of the 'baby one more time' dance etc, photo of a spider, white flower, red car (if your school has a carpark that doesnt involve kids leaving the property) ... something purple, a red shirt etc etc.

They LOVED it .. and all JUST to win an ice-block (cream/lollie - whatever you might call them wherever you are from).

Easy to set up and with 6th graders who are very competitive - a LOT of fun.

you tube also has scads of warner bros cartoons - roadrunner, tom and jerry, donald duck, etc.

kids love them !

Wallace and Gromit - The Wrong Trousers goes down very well. The end sequence is awesome, I watched it with 12 classes in all and I never got bored of it.

how about for 1st and 2nd grade of middle school? does anyone have any age-appropriate recommendations for short (30-45 minute) shows/movies?

sometimes you get a problem during the afternoon with these high maintenance, US based sites. they do servicing in the middle of the night (their time).
