Wondering if anyone knows some side trips from Beijing that would be possible during a 5 day trip there.. some smaller rural towns or places with good scenery especially. Thanks in advance! |

the great wall, of course.
one day for that.
i'd spend the other 4 days in beijing. i also remember either the summer or the winter palace being a fair bit out of the hustle/bustle of downtown.
there'dbe plenty to see and do in beijing for 5 days, i wouldnt really try to get out. |

Just to let you know, that Simatai has been closed temporarily (although I've heard estimations of the the closure lasting up to 2 years). It closed on June 17th, 2010. You could try Jinshanling or Mutianyu.
Here's a link for the sections of the wall. Click on the map for more info.

mutianyu is not as touristy, but yet well developed.
jinshangling and simatai are those parts of the wall that are further away from the city. i think it might take you a good 3 - 4 hours to get there.
therefore you see hardly a soul there. still very underdeveloped and parts of the wall are not accessible.
1.5 hours from beijing is a little city called beidaihe. its by the ocean. id say maybe 30.000 people live there. good seafood. but ask for chinese menu. as the menu for tourist has different prices.
train ticket is not expensive either. however, the last train back goes at 11pm and takes three hours.
tianjin is also not far from beijing. close to the ocean too. but i think its further than beidaihe.
but honestly.. 5 days in beijing will be well needed for the sights there.
they all open at 9am and close at 5pm with their last ticketsales at 330 or 4pm.
you will hardly have much time to go anywhere else.
city & great wall and at that mutianyu. simatai is too far out. |
