I saw Orphaned Land last year in Atlanta. Bored silly but they didn't suck as much as DSO.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Burzum. The albums Filosofem and Det Som Engang Var are perfect for providing a dark atmosphere during a run. In the winter, running + Burzum = epic.

Some other good non-Norwegian Black Metal in the same vein is Xasthur and Leviathan.

Edit: I didn't see Hvis Lysett Tar Oss listed in the first reply. I'd check out Filosofem first, still.

@metalhead - Metalheads were never known for their reading comprehension. Monumental Possession was BEFORE their wacky techno phase, have you even listened to it? Pure. Do you listen to Ulver or do you solely base their output off that Marriage of Heaven and Hell abomination? Satyricon's last three suck? Rebel Extravaganza is a really well put together album. Volcano was spotty, but had the track Black Lava. and... Nero is trash, I can't defend their latest. Still, Satyr has great song writing and riff and Frost is the best. .

"Gorgoroth is only good for their first 3" HA. So your main problem is that black metal has evolved? Gorgoroth, Immortal and Satyricon have put out some really good rock influenced stuff over the past few years. Elitists who know what they're talking about call it the "German sound" I just think it's tight, catchy riffing and excellent drumming. Even Darkthrone is more rocky now. Are you gonna defend them because they're kvlt? I think their stuff is unlistenable now... Canadian Metal? Hiking Metal Punks? Those are song names, really? I'll still give it a crack, good for a laugh.

Metalheads have always been extremely opinionated about their music, intolerant. I'm pretty opinionated myself, but I'm not gonna call someone else out about it. That's all you've done in this thread. just let them do their thing... To each his own, yeah? it's like these metal dudes I met in Thailand; had a band all wanky wind blown hair, open collared silk shirts and all. Crucifixes. Photoshopped pics; like eagles and lightning in the background and their music was Stratovarious-esque. OK. These were Thai kids, in the heart of Bangkok, shredding. It didn't bother me that they weren't shredding in my style, at least they weren't doing a synchronized dance act with their guitars. We had some beers, they showed me some records of more kvlt thai acts and all was good.

But high fives anyway. I don't want to get into a flame war and kill this thread. I just feel you're harshing everybody's gnarl, bro. Let's be friends!

Let's get some downloads up on this board, I can't be bothered to go search out these metal bands myself. I'm stuck in a loop right now where I put a bunch of new stuff on my MP3 and then forget what I haven't heard and end up listening to old Mayhem 15 times till I plug the thing into the compo again. Make a MEGAUPLOAD account and stick a few songs up there, I will definitely give 'em a listen. It's free and I haven't gotten any spam yet (knok on wod.) and metal bands aren't the kind of bands to point at you for copyright infringement.

@OP - God, I walked to school the other day listening to Marduk's "Panzer Division Marduk" and I almost started running myself. ~10 songs, the same exact tempo throughout. Punctuated by old movie clips of Germans yelling "fire" and the sound of bombs dropping, buzz bombs buzzing and mortars firing... Or if you're into a slow plodding jog, Sleep's Jerusalem really gets me in the zone for a drudge. it's a 50 minute song. about the holy land. and weed.

again, let me HEAR some of the metal you other dudes are into!

Yeah, correct, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, of course, but until I see someone offering something better than I have, then by Belial I will bust my balls saying otherwise.

Have you been listening to metal for over 20 years? Do you have Bathory, Beherit and Darkthrone tattoos on your arms? Have you written articles for metal magazines? Can you name all the Ruins Of Beverast albums and the years in which they were released? Do you accept that USPM like Virgin Steele is the best power metal, after hearing all their albums from 1981 onwards? Do you have signed YOB and Saint Vitus LPs in your collection? Could you name more than 10 NWOBHM metal bands if I asked you to?

I have more credibility than anyone in this thread, and yes, of course I listen to other people's opinions, that's how I discover great demos, sadly it has not happened here in this thread.

This may shock you my deathcore loving friend, a lot of metalheads are not white trash that lack the ability to read and understand, maybe you should go back to your Slipknot records?

@metalhead LOL Very Happy Are you Beevis or Butthead?

If you read Destroyers comments...and then...eh, yours! you'll realize you belong in the comments section on youtube, along with all the other 15 year old morons where "go listen to Slipknot" is met with snickers of laughter before another bong hit is made, carefully blowing the smoke outside so mum doesn't smell it.

This started as a interesting thread for people into extreme music, and you've basically ruined it with your overbearing, obnoxious and teenage angst attitude.

So what you've got some ink in your body and can remember some names and dates; kind of suggests an obsessive personality and quite an insecure one too.

I've been listening to all styles of music for 20 years; I don't need some one like you telling me what is good and what isn't; I'm pretty happy with what I listen to and maybe you should finally grow up a bit and realize music is a pretty subjective thing; there is no right or wrong music to listen to.

To sum up, if you see a metal band being interviewed, they usually come across as mild mannered and polite and seem to respect other bands; but sadly you're lacking those qualities and come across as a drunken, dope smoking nobody screaming for attention.

Not really into Black Metal. More of an old school fellow with about thirty years listening experience.

Ten NWOBHM bands from memory:
Raven, Dark Star, Shiva, Quartz, Savage, Jaguar, Gaskin, Chariot, Persian Risk and Saxon.

This year I've seen Accept in New York, Y&T in San Francisco and Maiden in Vancouver. I have a ticket for Keep It True XIV next year in Germany.

So, yeah junior you're credibility is relative.
