Quote:
Tony Blair, in his inevitable career progression from world leader to elder statesman, picks up another award, this time the 2010 Liberty Medal, a prize given annually by the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia.

In announcing the $100,000 prize, Philadelphia's mayor Michael Nutter praised Blair's "relentless pursuit of a long-elusive peace in Northern Ireland as British prime minister and his dedication to the Middle East peace process".

What about that other little matter..

Obama won a Peace Prize. Why shouldn't Blair? After all, they did that whole Iraq thing together.

Remember 1984? War is peace.

Like most politically-focused awards, I don't think this is something to be taken particularly seriously.

People should make sure he donates the money to charity - which I imagine he will anyway - if you have already several million gained from your war-time leadership, what's a 100 000 dollars?

If Mr Blair deserves a freedom medal for invading Iraq (and banning me from smoking) then satire IS dead

Quote:

When Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, soon after masterminding the U.S. bombing of Cambodia, the brilliant American satirist songster Tom Lehrer announced there was no further point in his job.
...
But surely we must now agree that if there was any breath left in satire's frail old lungs after Kissinger's peace prize, it was finally snuffed out yesterday when the National Constitution Center of the United States awarded its coveted annual Liberty Medal to Tony Blair for his 'steadfast commitment to conflict resolution'.
