Cancer of the oesophagus has low 5 year survival rates, if I recall, unfortunately.

Yes, my dad went that way. Quite awful. Sorry for poor Hitch. Perhaps he should have worried less about muslims and more about his cigarette habit.

For the record, I deliberately chose the word "child-like", as opposed to "childish", because I don't think that type of naive moral compass is an entirely unadmirable quality, however much I may disagree with the directions in which it seems to have pointed Hitchens in the last few years.

And say what you will about the guy, he does have a talent for placing his polemics front and centre in some of the most definining social and political issues of our day. Plus, he has an impressive ability to address himself to a variety of audiences across the middle-to-high brows of the cultural spectrum.

I hope to meet him before it's too late. He's my hero.
I think it's fine that he doesn't want deists to completely die out, I understand his wanting to argue with them.
And yes, that cancer update of his on vanity fair bummed me out...

Love him or loath him, he is great in debate, and rarely holds back with religious figures. Sure, compared to Dawkins he is less respectful, but he savages his often less worthwhile opponents. Just watch him decimate Galloway and Al Sharpton; it's a joy to watch. He is more than just bark, as there is genuinely an intellect to call upon on. I hope he recovers, needless to say.

pompous, self centered, arrogant, arm chair professor who is an alcoholic.

much prefer Richard Dawkins.
Hitchens just came across to conceited and arrogant for my liking. interesting fellow but sometimes he would just talk down to people like a belligerent drunk. emmm maybe he was drunk at the time hahaha

anyway.. dying is a sad end to life.

Yes, different styles but same pursuit. I'm grateful to have been exposed to both. I liked his book How Religion Poisons Everything.

Charlie Rose Interview (August 2010).

Charlie Rose interrupts him often, which is irritating.

Hitch interviewed on 'Newsnight' a week or so ago:

Even though Paxman asks fairly mundane questions, Hitch is still fascinating.

I find it really weird that a guy with not much time left is going to interviews. I would rather spend time with my family before I die.

From what I gather of Hitchens, he gets a lot more pleasure out of having attention given to him by adulating audiences than he does from something as mundane as family.

i don't know if you could really say his defining thesis is about the non-existence of god. i think that's a large part of who he is, what he believes in but to only give that to him is a bit much.

and i like others have had a hard time reconciling him (somewhat impossible) to his support for the war but he is also a figure who reminds me of, maybe a hemingway type - a person, an intellectual who is not opposed to war. i'm not opposed to war but i do oppose some types of war if they don't meet criteria.

i guess i feel this is an age when people are trying their best to be culturally relativist and hitchens doesn't seem to be really trying that.
does he have his faults? of course. but i think that's fine. and i think the world is "better" for having him out there.

and without deists, one could fall too easily into a false idolship. you need some of them around or it's really time to be afraid.
