Actor Park Yong-ha at the age of 33 hung himself.

Is their life really that difficult?

Suicide is a mental health issue. It's not an issue of something in life being "not difficult" to one who doesn't have the mental health problem.

Is it really that surprising? In Hollywood many actors OD, go on drinking binges, or steal. And probably for the same reasons Korean celebrities hang themselves.

In Korea the famous don't have the same access to drugs to drown their sorrows away. So instead of hearing of some actor OD and checking into some drug rehab clinic, or hanging themselves in some foreign country with drugs on the dresser counter, Korean actors just commit suicide.

Are you serious? Drugs are readily available here, perhaps not quite the same as in other countries but if they (the rich and famous) want them they can easily obtain them.
Perhaps they lack the exposure to that kind of recreational activity or coping mechanism but I really don't think suicide is used as a replacement for drug abuse.

Now I'm sure they could do like the Carradine man, and arrange for some auto-erotic baeness in Thailand for kicks... hopefully they could do a bit better than Mr Kung-Fu did... Sad

Are you serious? If I wanted to I could go to a place within 15 mins of here and watch people tweek out on Meth. BTW I live in a small Korean town. (pop @300k)

Almost all actors live in Seoul/big cities...so it'd be damn easy to get stoned. Hell...just go ask a foreigner. Supposedly we're all stoners.

Is it really that easy to get narcotics? Dang if I know where. I don't think that many students partake in it like back home.

Anyways, the main point is that for every Korean celebrity suicide, you can find an American celebrity that knocked themselves off, or were found dead due suspicious circumstances. It doesn't surprise me, but for some reason it sure does surprise Koreans.

Could it be possible that he was in the closet? The article says he was repeatedly saying sorry to his family. Being gay and having your family finding out is still a major cause of shame in Korea. Just a theory.

A high suicide rate is a fairly good indicator of how crap a country is. Koreans, please take note.

According to this:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10459061.stm he couldn't cope with seeing his father die of cancer. Suicides are always sad, but my heart breaks for his family, now faced with planning two funerals.
