I would've been harsher than this local columnist's op-ed, but it's reasonably accurate & well written.

Pretty poor article, struck me as something written hastily on the demands of an editor who had half a page to fill in the women's section.

I don't think it's been a great world cup and if a few boring matches manage to scare off parasites like Paris Hilton then I'm ok with that. I think it's called the beautiful game because of it's simplicity, you can play it anywhere, with very little equipment, on the street or in a jungle clearing all you need is something round.

Like most sports it takes time to understand the subtleties that provide the enjoyment, I'm not sure there is any sport that can grab your attention immediately and sustain it for 90 minutes, though women's volleyball did for me.
Finally, what's she on about regarding the chanting? That's one of the best things about football, the atmosphere. The vuvzuelas have ruined it this time round, but I did at least hear the Germans singing to the English 'You're just a small part of Scotland'
Ahhhh I don't know why I waste time reading the opinions of twats, perhaps it's only to reassure myself that I'm right.

So basically they're saying 'I don't understand the game, therefore it sucks'.

This article is embarrassing for the genuinely nice, intelligent Americans out there.

That Germany game was a good example of why I watch football. Stomping. Sport at its pinnacle, and they dont have a 'superstar' amongst them. England should be taking notes.

This article does a gross disservice to the American's who enjoy football/soccer. The writer is clearly clueless, and how you can call the article "reasonably accurate and well written" is, quite frankly, beyond me.

Top class performance from the Germans last night, I'm starting to get the feeling that the trophy is theirs for the taking.

^ And yet people still say Spain could stop them. I have no idea what to expect, frankly, and that makes it even better.

Spain v Germany will be close. Thomas Mueller will be out for the Germans.

Netherlands should be heavy favorites against Uruguay considering Suarez is out.

I like seeing first-time winners, so I guess I'll be rooting for Spain and the Netherlands. Probably Spain a little more, b/c Netherlands have been runners up twice in 1974 & 1978, and Spain only made the final round-robin in 1950 (having a round-robin to determine a champion seemed odd).

Spain are the natural choice for me. England and Germany have history, Uruguay didnt exactly cover themselves in glory on Friday, and Holland have Dirk Kuyt; for whom the prospect of being a World Cup winner is absurd. I teach loads of Spanish people and always got on really well with them so Im an honorary Spaniard. We have a park here in Manchester which has 2 huge screens so Saturday was a good day.

Spain are the most talented team there although theyre underperforming. You couldnt write them off even against a German team playing like that.

But beware Arjen Robben, the kind of guy that can take this world cup and make it his own. Its going to be an interesting week.

Can't say I'm sad to see them go. I am surprised they were so outclassed, but they had that cold, clinical German control to deal with^^.

I knew Germany were almost going to win - having watched them through this tournament. But I didn't expect it to be such a slaughter!

Poor Maradona - I felt quite bad for him. Messe played well, but he was swarmed by the Germans whenever the Argentinians pressed forward.

You just couldn't help but admire the Germans though. They were just EXCELLENT.

It was spellbinding. A game worth waiting for. The Germans were fantastic - playing against one of the best teams in the world and making them look like schoolboys.

I expect the final to be Holland vs Germany. And that will be another cracker.

I'd expect Spain to pose Germany a different set of problems. You'd hope that they would do a better job of defending from the front and holding Germany's full backs up the pitch. I also hope they drop Torres and play with an extra midfielder so they can have numbers in midfield.

I hope Spain will win as Xavi is probably my favorite all time player.

Argentina's tactical plan in their game was suicide although Germany did play very well.

The German team has one huge advantage over the Spaniards: they can finish. I'm expecting a close game, with the score about 2-1 on a late header by Klose. Spain will probably control the ball longer, but won't be able to break the defense and score, while Germany will score on a quick counter attack.

Though, Mueller being out is a big hurt. Dude is having an amazing cup...and only had 2 international caps before this tournament started Shocked He took Ballack's number, and after this cup, they should just have Ballack retire and give it to him permanently.

I would also like to see a Spain - Netherlands final, but Germany is going to be tough to beat.

I think a reply is in order.

First of all, I'm not even a big fan of the local columnist who wrote the article. In this case, though, I agreed with her analysis, even if I thought her case was understated.

Now, for rusty1983, I suppose the'' article [WOULD be] embarrassing for the ... nice, intelligent Americans out there.'' That is, the 20 or so Americans that actually give a rat's patooey about soccer. Well, unlike tiger fancini, you at least seem to understand the concept of the apostrophe. Too bad both of you refer to "American[']s" when in fact the op-ed came from Canada. "Nationality envy'', I think they call it.

And there's Hwa. I'm neither the youngest or most physically-fit adult on the face of the planet. That said, I'm damned sure if I was walking down the street & unexpectedly felt a tap on the shoulder, I wouldn't collapse like a sack of potatoes, writhing in agony. Yet that's what these soccer ''athletes'' do on a routine basis. God forbid they would ever play real sports, like FOOTBALL or hockey.

But I guess that's one of the "subtleties'' of the game: be a wimp & a phoney. Then there are the fans. Sure, chant like drunken fools at a game. Sure beats following what's actually happening during a game so that you can cheer, boo or fall silent at the appropriate times. Mind you, judging from the ''action'' at soccer games I guess I'd get drunk & chant too.

And finally, for any Brits out there with lingering pains of class inferiority, here's more salt in the wound: you want to suggest that N. American soccer haters are ''savages'', yet let me pose a few Qs: Ever hear of Dallas Cowboys fans killing or assaulting an official? Or Saskatchewan Roughriders fans being banned from outside home game venues due to their "hooliganism'? St. Louis Blues fans going on a bloody, violent rampage?

Not likely. Something to think about when you have a family reunion at a council house & see yourself surrounded by lager louts.
