Morning, everyone.
I just received the visa preparation information from my recruiter and had a quick question for you more experienced teachers.
Is it normal for the Korean Consulate in D.C. to hang on to your passport for 3-4 days while they review your paperwork?
I've been told by many sources to never let anyone take your passport, and I don't want to be wrong about this, even if it is the government that is holding it for me. (You can probably see my newb paranoia, but honestly I'm just making sure I don't get screwed.)
And to expand on this: how do you keep your passport safe? You have to keep it and your ARC with you at all times, right? Or am I completely nuts? (haha)
Thank you.

I've dropped off my passport at several different embassies/consulates in order to get a visa. Some places will do it while you wait, but it's not out of the ordinary to have to drop it off for a few days. It's good that you're concerned about security, but you really shouldn't have to worry as long as it's with another government entity (for official purposes nonetheless), especially one that's located in the US. |

yeah it's normal for the consulate to hold your passport for a few days, the same thing will happen when you get here and go to the immigration office to register for your ARC. Once you have your ARC you should keep that on you at all times, as for the passport, while in Korea I never carry it around unless I need it for some kind of identifaction purpose (like at the bank when wiring money home) You really should only be constantly carrying your passport around if you're on a tourist visa in a foreign country or some other short term visa where you aren't eligable for a resident card. |

That's what I was thinking. I'm hoping I can get it back the same day since DC is a good 3-4 hours away from me. I really don't want to deal with that traffic more than once. XD |

They should mail it to you. When I did it in Chicago, I had to go there for the interview, but I was told to bring a self-adressed stamped envelope. I got it back in the mail a few days later. |
