I thought I'd give chrome another go since there area lot of extensions for it nowadays. But when one goes to install extensions, these kinds of messages come up.

It's definitely not a joke and neither is it just the one extension.

Here's an extension that enables mouse gestures:

One for Adblock Plus:

And this for youtube downloaders:

This just gives you information about what the extension interacts with. For example, of course the youtube downloader needs access to your data on youtube, how could it not? You're using it to interact with youtube. Of course the mouse gestures has access on your website data; you use it to switch between those websites using gestures. The internet explorer tab extension probably has such broad disclosed interaction because it could possibly interact with any data on your computer (for example, if you chose to upload a file to the internet using it). That doesn't mean it will do it without your permission, though.

Obviously if you don't trust the makers of the individual extensions, you shouldn't download them. But, keep in mind that Chrome itself (and realistically, any internet browser) probably technically falls into the same category as the internet explorer tabs extension, with "access" to all data on your computer and everything you do on the internet.

I dunno man - Maybe I have a private stash of photos on my computer that's only for me and GF? Does Chrome need access to all that data? Maybe I have an encrypted file with passwords saved somewhere? How about that? What about a new book I'm writing? How about banking details?

While I appreciate you responding, the loose wording of the security warnings, makes me very wary of installing such extensions and Chrome itself. Do you remember when Chrome came out? Google had written in their TOS that everything that went through the browser became copyright of Google! A letter I might write would become copyright of Google! Madness - rightfully users kicked up a stink about that and Google was forced to change their TOS.

I'm no tin foil hat conspiracy man but these extension push the boundaries too far for my liking.

So come on back to Firefox.

It doesn't bother warning you, so you won't have to worry.

Ignorance is bliss. Smile

What really got me off Chrome and its extensions is that each extension runs in its own process, meaning that when you open Windows task manager you can see (for example, in my case) 10 or more processes running. Maybe that's even a great idea but not something I like.

That's a security thing - if something manages to compromise a process it's only got access to a very limit set of rights. It might look messy under the hood, but it runs great.

As for IE Frame needing access to all your surfing info, of course it's going to, it's a defacto browser.
