3 weeks long (9am ish to 12 noon ish).

Then 1 measly weeks vacation (5 days), followed by 2 weeks of deskwarming 9am to 5pm.

Three weeks. Two hours a day, co-teacher (mixed blessing) and a bump up in salary for 1 of the 2 hours/day.
The salary bump is a moving target as they seem to change the rate every time I talk with them but it's a nice step up for a few weeks.
Yeah, they should just standardize the camp or put a max on it with the minimum amount.

It must be my Irish background that causes me to jump into fights I shouldn't Smile but I do feel your name is beginning to stick in mind as a seriously unhappy and snippy poster when you respond to others on the board.

You're business of course but your unhappiness with others may not actually be about others.....if you get the drift?

Only this has nothing to do with human rights and workplace standards. The Korean teachers are on DIFFERENT CONTRACTS than we are. They are long-term professional teachers (tenure). We aren't (well most of us).

Besides which we are teaching assistants (at least that is what we are classified as).

Do you think that TA's back home get the same salary and perks as a tenured professor? Of course not. So why would you expect it here? Long term help and short term help are different the world over.

I think you're being a bit black & white about this. Look at the range of responses for how long summer camp goes and the differences in pay amongst foreign teachers alone - those are issues about standards aren't they?

If foreign teachers were free to negotiate different wages, duration of camps or to accept or decline doing camp (similarly to evening classes) then it may feel fairer to people. Given the fact it is a contract "requirement" with so many different time frames and pay differences......again, I think this has quite a bit to do with standards.

Whatever your position is on this - it should be obvious by now that people share information about this at Dave's and elsewhere. It seems like something worth clarifying.

It's my first year teaching so I had nothing to compare with. Of course I think it's obscene, and all my friends have way less work, but I had initial doubts because the camp coord. had this shocked reaction to the effect of, "WHAAAAT?! You think this is a lot?! Please understand our school's situation. etc, etc, etc."

So I guess it's kind of nice to know I'm getting a bad deal with my camp. Here's hoping to better ones in the future--the biotch is leaving my school next semester!

This is my first year at the school. I have tried and tried reasoning with the woman (witch) in charge of the camp. Saddest part is, she doesn't even have anything to do with English anymore--she did last year, but since her replacement is a recent grad from teaching school, she decided she'd "help" him out by constructing the entire camp. She has ridiculous aspirations to move up in SMOE so she tries to make everything as difficult, long, etc. as possible to show off to the higher-ups.

She doesn't believe that other schools have considerable less work than ours. Actually, she refuses to even listen to the faint possibility that I'm doing even a LITTLE more work than anyone I know. It always comes down to, "I'm just following the contract" (that's funny, cause I teach 8 afterschool classes a week without a co-teacher when the contract says we are entitled to one) and the old chestnut: "Please understand our situation".

I'm pretty happy in my job all things considered but the idea of saying "please understand the situation" when you get tossed a scenario you don't like sounds like it could be fun to me. Cool

Mine is the same mandated 3 weeks (22 teaching hours per week) that I have done for 4 camps now.

Just say "Please understand MY situation" right back.

Take your vacation. Let them know you'll do it either during summer holiday, or, if they put it in writing, during the school year--per your contract.
