The US could suspend all legal travel to China. With no rich Americans spending money in Beijing and Hong Kong and Shanghai that would put quite a dent in the money in some Chinese pockets. I refuse to go anyway, the way that Americans get overcharged for Visas.

Uh, no. China is booming, American tourists going there or not will make no difference at all.

I'll be going back to China soon, it's quite fascinating really, the place really is changing at a rapid pace. Friendly people at least.

How can any foreign firm do business there?

Yeah, tourism (especially from Americans) is a drop in the ocean that is the Chinese economy.

Funny you should ask. Seems a journalist asked this in a press conference.

Quote:

[Translation is mine]

Quote:
Journalist: There have been comments in the media that this case shows the Chinese judicial system lacks transparency, and this could cause foreign investors to fear investing in China. What is your view on this?

Spokesman: Could it be that if [Xue Feng] were found innocent and released, they would then say the Chinese judicial system is open and transparent?

[The spokesman then goes on to assure that the defendant's rights and privileges have been protected]

If this was the case for Canada, how about kick out all of the Chinese nationals posing as students that are acting as industrial spies. CSIS has estimated that there are over 30,000 spies working for the PRC in Canada. THe government has to keep it on the low down though out of fear of disrespecting the Chinese community which hold key votes for politicians.

My solution? If a Chinese national in Canada is convicted of clandistine activity like industrial espionage that will cost Canadian companies 100s of millions of dollars, simply kick them out. Revoke their visas and send them packing. Canada has a huge target on it for the upper elite 200 million people of CHina and it gives me the shakes. This isn't about some foreign national who is trying to cheat the system and get a refugee hearing. These are intelligent educated Chinese nationals that are costing the Canadian economy 100s of millions of dollars each year.

GE's CEO whines about China

Quote:
Jeffrey Immelt, General Electrics chief executive, has launched a rare broadside against the Chinese government, which he accused of being increasingly hostile to foreign multinationals.

He warned that the worlds largest manufacturing company was exploring better prospects elsewhere in resource-rich countries, which did not want to be colonised by Chinese investors. I really worry about China, Mr Immelt told an audience of top Italian executives in Rome, accusing the Chinese government of becoming increasingly protectionist. I am not sure that in the end they want any of us to win, or any of us to be successful.

He wins my 'no shit, Sherlock' prize of the month for that statement I bolded. The Economist provides a bit of balance to his comments.

Quote:

But the Chinese have always driven a hard bargain, and they have always made it clear that they will give only to get. The American Chamber of Commerce reported in 2008 that three-quarters of the foreign companies that they surveyed were finally making money in China, a big increase on the historical average. Many Western companies, notably Yum! Brands, have finally cracked the China code, and are becoming ubiquitous across the country.

IOW, dealing with the Chinese in business requires patience and nerve. Its not for pussies.
