Okay, i'm about to get my first paycheck and i am wondering how the bank here works.
Are there savings and checking accounts or just one account?
I want to use my card right after I get paid.

Also, do the ATM's for KEB have english?

Yes KEB ATM's have English! KEB is actually and affiliate of Bank of America.

They have both Savings and Checking Accounts. KEB is one of the most foreign friendly banks in Korea. You can request to get an ATM card that can be used world wide!

Did you set up an ex-pat account? If you do everything will e printed in English. Online banking with KEB is great as well.

As for English ATMs, 99% of all ATMs here have an English option, and the fee for non-KEB banks is around 1000 a pop.

I apologize for taking us slightly off-topic, but do you know if Wachovia/Wells Fargo has a similar affiliate in Korea? And if not, if I were to open up a Bank of America account in the US before I leave for Korea, would it be accessible with KEB once I get to Korea? From what I've read on here, KEB does seem to be the bank of choice for expat teachers, doesn't it?

Standard Chartered (재잏 은행) have a savings account (paying 3.6%) and a regular day to day account all in one (called the "do dream" account)....plus internartional card that works abroad and free ATM withdrawals after hours.

KEB is pretty good too but no free withdrawals after banking hours

For me I would only choose SC or KEB in Korea. The only 2 banks that are foreigner friendlier than others with good services in English.
