Just another example of the Korea Force defending a Korean trying to rip off a foreigner.

If the price for having a lawyer call is less than your key money, have him make an official call demanding your money.

THIS is why I let my school handle my key money. Sure, I could have rented a larger place on my own, but screw that. It's less to worry about.

I hope you get your cash!

Are you completing your lease agreement?
Did you give notice?

If you've finished your lease contract, you're entitled to full refund of key money. If not, your landlord is entitled to deduct some money from your key money and/or hold it until he or you find another tenant. It all depends on your lease agreement.

Every. Single. Time.

It's how this works. Despite being property owners in one of the most expensive cities in the world, no landlord I've ever rented from has been able to produce the 5, 10, or 20 million won deposit on demand.

They just turn over what they get from the new tenant to you directly. However, that guy doesn't get his key money until the guy moving into HIS new place gets it, and so on and so on and so on.

It's culture. Please understand.

The only thing that I understand is their inability to manage money. With that said, I gave them 2 months notice that I was moving out and I did complete my contract with them. That type of incompetence is ridiculous.

Yup. I've had the same experience. He'll return the money when he finds a new tenant. It's a common practice here.

I always assumed that the getting the money from the next tenant was the way that it was meant to be done, as I have never heard of it happening any other way.

Got a good place? Throw a bunch of ads on the internet, try to help them out. Maybe you'll get lucky.

If the OP gave adequate notice, the money should have been ready. I suppose this is the way things are done here, but it doesn't make it a good business practice. Seriously, the landlord doesn't have the 5 million (give or take) to repay?

In a perfect world, when someone wants to move out, another will want to move in. Clearly that does not happen every time! And the first person who ever rented from the guy gave the key money to him. Therefore, he should have it on reserves in case someone else moves out before the new tenant moves in.

This isn't rocket science. I would have a HUGE lawsuit brought against me if my renters just moved out of my house in Chicago.

Again...what a bunch of morons.

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit.

He was NOT "defending a Korean trying to rip off a foreigner". He was defending Korea as a society from a false generalization in spite of the lying and cheating actions of ONE individual Korean.
