I'll be in Phuket for 8 days in early Sept. Are there any nice places near Phuket that aren't actually in Phuket? I'd like to find nicer, cheaper places to stay than what I could get in Phuket, without having to trek too far.
Also, I really want to take the ferry to Koh Phi Phi and do Maya Bay. Is this something I could do in a day or should I give myself 2-3 days? |

Railey Bay, Ao Nung, (Krabi) or even Kamala Beach on Phuket Island.
Patong in central Phuket was awful, crowded & overpriced.
The boats from Railey Bay to Ko Phi Phi are about 1/2 the price of those in Phuket. There's also the 300 baht fixed price tuk tuks in Phuket which I hated. May as well use a taxi between beaches! Karon & Kata beaches I haven't been to yet. It's also possible to do daytrips to Bokaranee Falls & James Bond Island from Ao Nang. |

I assume you meant not in "Phuket town" and were not meaning "not on Phuket island".
2 days is better for Phi-Phi island ... 3 is ok if you want the beach time.
there are lots of places to get to that are on Phuket island that are away from Phuket town and away from Patong beach.
Krabi is also within easy reach (1/2 day or so by car).
Perhaps you might want to have a look on google maps or google earth or just do a quick search...
You are also aware that the Phuket region is the MOST EXPENSIVE area in Thailand (Bangkok included).

That's tough, because most of the nicest beaches and places are in Phuket. Ko Phi Phi can't compete with the nice beaches on Phuket. |

Karon and Kata are very nice and much less crowded than Patong. I've been there for the last 3 years and I'll be off again at Christmas. |

Phuket isn't bad at all. Or overly noisy/dirty/expensive. Just some parts.
If you stayed off of Phuket Island and travelled onto Phuket for day trips, it'll take up too much time and money for transportation.
If you hate crowds, why not stay at Kata Beach on Phuket? It's really nice there. |

So would you say Kata Beach is one of the best beaches on Phuket? I have found some decent looking places there and it was on the top of my list for places to go in Phuket. |

My wife thinks Karon is better. Both are nice and unlike Patong.
Karon has pretty strong waves. If you have a small child I don't recommend it for swimming. The waves flipped my daughter right over.

No kids! I think I'd rather have a gentle beach though so I could just float around and not worry about crashing around.
I found a place online that looks decent and it's right near Kata, but it doesn't have a/c and that concerns me! I'm assuming Thailand is going to be really hot... |

Not a worry next to the beach.
The ocean is a great heat sink and keeps the temps moderate (unlike in BKK).
A nice room with a fan is more than adequate.
Even better are windows with screens and just leave it open to let the sea breeze in.

That is good to hear! I might go ahead and book that room then.
Thanks for all the info everyone |

I like Karon better than Kata because there seems to be more going on. It's a nicer beach too IMO.
That said, you can't go wrong with either. |

Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach are pretty nice. I sometimes also head up to Nai Yang Beach near the airport.
If you really want to have 4 or 5 mile white sand beach all to yourself, just head up further north around the bridge connecting the island with the mainland or head over the bridge. |

Khao Lak on the mainland, to the north of Phuket Island, is another option. |
