What's a good short story or picture book for low level 6th graders?

I trying to think up ideas for my summer camp and I decided to go with storys/fairytales and role play. For one of the day's I want my students to read a short story/picture book and then create their own book.

My students levels are fairly low but I also want to give them something interesting to read. My school has the little princesses books and dvds (I don't like salad/I want to do magic ect) which matches their levels (If you know what books i'm talking about) but they probably wouldn't be interested in it. Any suggestions?

Oh, I'd go with Heungbu / Nolbu. I have it in ppt, audio and also with small pictures for story writing and putting the story in order. Get them all here - last few weeks, the site will soon disappear forever... http://bit.ly/bPFMeM

I also like The Eyebrow Story of Peter Reynolds. Just keep playing and stopping and asking Ss to predict what will happen next.

Thanks those are great resources! I'm looking for maybe an actual book that I can buy. My school has one of those cool book scanner things so I can actually make them into high quality powerpoints. The eyebrow story is definitely cute and would work well for my 4th graders though. The other stories are my be above my students level (hungbu and nulbu) and below the platinum classes levels.

Any other suggestions?

The enormous turnip is quite a good story, I got the kids to read through, explore the story together. Then I got them to act it out in groups, we also got them to make their own costumes.

They followed the story really well, and it worked well.

You can download folders from mediafire but it will cost. Do you mean the leveled readers with worksheets? They are available, zipped on EFL Classroom - click the RESOURCES tab and then READING - STORIES .

I second the enormous turnip (I think it was originally a Russian folktale?). You might try "The Little Mole". I have it on our site in video and ppt with audio. It is well known by Koreans and a great story that students can adapt in a million ways.
