Hello,
On July 21st my fiancee and I plan to travel to the US. She already had a passport but she apparently needs to get a new one because Korean citizens can now enter America without a visa.
How long does passport processing usually take in Korea and is there any way to expedite the process?

Isn't your fiancee Korean?
If so why ask a bunch of wayguks about the details of processing times for a KOREAN passport?
She can simply contact the relevant Korean authorities and get it done....
If she is not Korean, I do not get your question. |

Yes, she's Korean. And I presumed that other wayguks have Korean girlfriends, fiancees, and wives, all of whom need a Korean passport to travel to whatever waygukland the wayguk came from. I further presumed that there may be a few among them whose SOs had to deal with a similar problem.
My fiancee can find out all the answers to her questions tomorrow when the district office opens. I just wanted to see if I could find some answers tonight to give her some peace of mind. |

My girlfriend got a new passport last year from her local gu office. She says that it took less than a week.
Edit: And she just added that you can maybe get it in three days. |

Sounds like a trend of quick processing, especially compared to the time it takes to process US passports. Thanks! |

Not quite so fast slick...it is my understanding that while koreans do not need a visa...they still need to apply in advance/on line for permission....and a passport number is needed. If she already has a visa...it can be transfered to the replacement passport....if she has a fiancee visa...no problem...but...if she needs to get a new updated passport......the prevailing authorities would have told her that she needs the new biometric passport before handhand....
I do know this.....if the average john/doe korean goes to the airport for a flight to the land where the streets are paved of gold and she/he has no prior permission/approval from immigration....that person is not entering the U.S.!
Especially a young korean female!
Unless the requirements have changed over the past month....
on another note...koreans can go to Guam without prior permission. |

From the US Embassy in Seoul...
Your travel must be for business, tourism or transit only.
You must possess a valid e-Passport.
You must have a ticket for return or onward travel on a participating carrier.
You must depart the U.S. within 90 days after entry.
You must receive an approval from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to traveling.
Travelers must visit the ESTA website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and complete an online application before they are given permission to use the VWP. The ESTA application will ask for the same biographical and eligibility information currently required on the paper I-94W form. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel; however, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recommends that applications be submitted no less than 72 hours prior to departure.
This is the "catch" (You must receive an approval from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to traveling.)
A single young korean female will most likely NOT be granted approval from the ESTA!. |

| I'm willing to bet the passport process can be expidited. If she goes to the place that issues passports in Seoul, surely she can get it the same day if she pays for it. It's that way in the USA. |
