A recruiter recently told me that schools are getting picky, so it would benefit me to get TEFL certification. I would like to avoid that.

Is TEFL certification starting to become the standard?

I recently got hired and the reason they picked me over a fresh female was because I had a year experience AND tefl certification. My recruiter said without it they would have passed on me. The offer was quite good. Above average pay, nice apartment, etc. I could have found another position, but not as good. Don't know how common this is though.

It's all about physical appearance.

My hagwon gave me an extra 100,000 won a month for having the certificate. Pays for itself.

No it isn't.

Obviously, do look well dressed and groomed in the picture you send to potential schools, but a decent school will consider your qualifications. I have heard that there are schools out there who want to hire a "pretty" teacher or someone who fits their own stereotype of what a Westerner looks like. You don't want to work for those schools anyway. Trust me, Korea is not full of English teachers who look like GQ/Victoria's Secret models. Make sure you have a professional resume, cover letter, and picture and you should be fine. And yes, competition is becoming more fierce, so if you have the time and money, a TEFL certificate would certainly help your chances.

@OP

I think for hagwons it might be...

A lot of the positions I've been looking at are saying "certified teacher preferred" or something like that. But I've also been looking at positions for gyopo-only, so it may be different for E2-visa jobs...I'm not sure.

And I think GEPIK prefers TEFL cert as well. But in my opinion, it doesn't hurt. A TEFL course costs a couple hundred bucks, which pays itself off with like 2-3 paychecks after receiving the pay-bump.

It's not so much that it's a demand, but obviously if you have someone with some kind of certificate and/or experience going up against a newbie. The experience will probably win out.
