Your colleague is very well informed.
Ask yourself, who controls the water?

"OTOH in 2008 I wrote in his name on the presidential ballot."

Let's hear it for alt. parties!

Your colleague is right. The water wars have already started in India where the rich in New Delhi are watering their grass and washing their cars with the stuff while the poor line up at water trucks that pass maybe once a week. Here's the video

Why the focus on the US? Almost every economist will agree that the US is in better shape than other Industrialized countries. The US economy does not need saving.

What industralized countries are in better shape than the USA?

Not the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Portugal, nor Greece. Germany? Perhaps, but it could also be dragged down by its fellow EU members.

So that leaves:

Canada
Australia

And if you want to expand it to OECD countries, then throw in Korea and Poland. And pkang said other industralized countries, not ALL other industralized countries.

Canada seems to be doing better than the US and to have recovered faster from the economic crash. Economic indicators seem to show this (unemployment rate for example).

The US economy did need a major tune up but that is not the fault of your average American. That is the result of years of work by the previous administration that saw unprecendented levels of laissez faire and of deregulation, espercially in banking, morgages and other areas. Oddly enough, the market cannot regulate itself and show restraint or consider the greater good...it seems to go for the jugular and aim at fast profit....strange how that keeps happening... Laughing

Nope. It was a government-created credit expansion (lent out at low interest rates to people of low, or no, creditworthiness).

Quote:
Fact Number One: It was liberal Democrats, led by Senator Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, who for years-- including the present year-- denied that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were taking big risks that could lead to a financial crisis. It was Senator Dodd, Congressman Frank and other liberal Democrats who for years refused requests from the Bush administration to set up an agency to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It was liberal Democrats, again led by Dodd and Frank, who for years pushed for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to go even further in promoting subprime mortgage loans, which are at the heart of today's financial crisis. It was the government that pressured financial institutions in general to lend to subprime borrowers, with such things as the Community Reinvestment Act and, later, threats of legal action by then Attorney General Janet Reno if the feds did not like the statistics on who was getting loans and who wasn't.

What I posted doesn't remotely support your point. You've totally misunderstood it and clearly have very little grasp of the topic.
