So my recruiter is trying to tell me that JLS normally doesn't give any vacation time to their teachers and that they had to fight for us to get us 5 vacation days (us=me&husband). Why the hell would anyone work for JLS then? Is he lying to me and trying to make me sign a poopy contract?

A few schools do that, especially the smaller hogwans. I have friends who worked for a hogwan that gave them Christmas day off, but they had to work the next Saturday to make up the missed day of work. And a friend who was given Buddha's birthday off, but was told she had to work Sunday to make it up or recieve a cut in her pay. (not working for JLS, but other hogwans that don't offer vacation days)

I agree, don't sign it. It's a sign that the hogwan will probably work you to the ground and get as much out of you as they can with giving up as little money as possible.

They are slave drivers plain and simple. They can get away with not offering vacation time because enough teachers sign up with them without requesting vacation.

JLS is a POS hogwon.

Making up classes for free because of a national holiday. Ha. Even working on a national holiday... Do students even show up? What's the point?

Are there any labor regulations for working holidays that state you be paid double time or anything? If not, that's pretty pathetic.

Thanks for the responses. I mean, really, it's a crap deal, especially considering that the contract states that there is mandatory Saturday work every other week AND we'll be expected to work extra teaching hours during school vacation times.

I knew, deep down inside, it sounded all wrong, but the recruiter kept threatening us, saying that it was impossible to find couple positions anymore and that we should be grateful we got an offer at all...

Are you a gyopo? I heard that the Korean English teachers at that institution get no vacation time, but get paid much much more than the Native English speakers. But the amount of money depends on the number of students in the classes.

Thats total BS. Ive worked there for over a year as native speaker instructor we def get 10 days + national holidays. Love JLS. It sounds like youre being hired as a korean teacher.

I second what lorenchristopher said. You are either describing holidays of the Korean English teachers, or you are dealing with a franchise school, and these contracts are completely different from the centrally run schools. As JLS hires their teachers directly, and doesn't use recruiters for their foreign teachers, I think you are probably negotiating with a franchise.
