I think, as CentralCali wrote, to actually SEE the human poop, you'd have to go to Seoul Station. I haven't been there in over year, so I couldn't tell you for sure, but it would make sense given the amount of people there with limited access to bathrooms.

You are lucky indeed. Normally all it takes is walking by a large sewer grate, especially on a humid, non-windy day. It comes and goes sometimes, but when it is there, it lets you know, believe me.

You mean sewers smell like poop?

Wow thanks for the nose news neighbor.

I am going to agree with Bucheon. After all the years and different places I have lived in Korea, there really isn't much of a difference in prices. Maybe 10% or there abouts.

Obviously it does depend on where exactly you go shopping, but most prices are uniform.

김밥 is one example, its not usually more than 100 won difference in most places. Though prices seem to be going up over the years, inflation seems to be about 5%.

Though, all things are relative I guess. I do find that when I first arrived here, kimbab was selling for approx 900 won and now its going for 1300, though Soju was selling for 800-900 won and I can still find it for 1000 or 1050.

Nope. I meant poop smells like poop. I've had to go to Seoul Station in the wee hours of the morning. On one occasion, there was a pile of poop inside the station, albeit in a corner. Usually, the piles are just outside Exit 3 (West side of station) where many of the homeless are building their cardboard homes every night.

Yeah, that's a world class setting you have there, Seoul! Busan Station ameliorated the problem somewhat by simply removing the rows of seats and replacing them with ottomans in "waiting cafes."

Odd, I've seen kimbap sell for 1500 - 3000 won depending on location.

Personally, I see some pretty big fluctuations in pricing.

And as for the smell of piss and poop, I smell it every day as I pass through Seoul Station. Smell it - but rarely see it. And that's travelling through that station near everyday for the past 5 years.

You mean a city of 20 million has bums and homeless people?

Wow thanks for the 411 there.

I'd take Seoul Station over ghetto X in just aobut any other 'World Class' city.

EDIT- This just in- Apparently bums like to hang around train stations. More breaking news at 11.

Quit bein' a smart-a#%. Wink

Sewers smell like poop, but you don't notice unless the sewer is open in areas where people are. To be fair to Seoul, its sewer is technically NOT open, but there are places where there's nothing separating you from the sewage but those steel grates. It might have been impossible to build an effective closed sewer given the landscape and general configuration of the city. I'm no engineer, so I can't say for sure.

Still a valid reason to dislike the place, though. Then again, where I used to live in Gyeonggi, you'd occasionally be assaulted by stench, but I didn't care as much because I was having too much fun.

You mean the basic kimbab or the other types, kimchi kimbab, tuna kimbab, bulgogi kimbab?

I was meaning simply the basic kimbab. Though, if those are the prices that are going in Seoul, then please leave them there as in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Gyeongi-do, I have seen the prices of Kimbab to be pretty much the same.

Yes, but the fact that these things are more or less the same in all big cities doesn't make any of them less of a reason to hate Seoul. I, too, would take Seoul Station over the west side of Chicago or Camden, NJ, but luckily we have many more options.

I agree that big cities are lame compared to more suburban or rural areas. Fun on the weekends, not on the weekdays.

1. Poop. The odor of human stool is constantly wafting up from the sewers, and it's worse in Seoul than I ever remember it being back in Gyeonggi-do, especially on hot days. There's also a lot of dog and cat poop lying around, especially in the backstreets of Itaewon.

All I have to say is, definitely don't go to New Delhi, India then. Compared to New Delhi in the summer. Seoul smells like a rose garden.,

Noted. Funny you posted this when you did - I was just reading a blog on Third World sewers, and several places in India were (predictably) mentioned.

If India's economic growth continues, hopefully better sanitation will come with it.

Hope so, there are open sewers all over the place there. You literally see $h*t running down the side of the streets. On more that one occasion I saw people taking dumps in said gutters and they couldn't care less if people were watching. Practically the whole city smells like a sewer in the summer.

First time I ever saw that, I was dumbstruck. I am pretty well traveled and have been to some rather "rustic" countries. At least they go off into the bushes to do their business... I also happened to notice one individual didn't bring anything to wipe with.

Holy poop, guys, the OP was talking about living in Seoul vs another part of Korea. Don't worry, Korea's honour is safe for another day. You can put your plastic He-Man swords away. I didn't realize NJ, Chicago and Delhi were in Korea. Does the KTX go there. Christ.

THIS.

Not everyone here believes that their version of moral order should be imposed by law upon the rest of society and that they have the right to never be offended or inconvenienced ever in their life.

Yes, because the guy saying he doesn't like the smell of poop was totally trying to force his moral code on the brave and fair people of Korea. First they came for the poop-smellers and I said nothing because I didn't mind the smell of poop.

WORSE THAN HITLER!!!
