So, i'm re-signing with SMOE and the contract is in front of me to sign. I've no problems with it. But when I asked if I could have a copy as a file for reference in the future, they told me that the official document specifically said to not give it to me as a file. Anybody else had this?

I'm going to scan it anyhow. It seems kinda stupid. All the new teachers signing this contract will have it emailed to them anyhow.

That's nuts. Scan it once they add their red chop.

Did you use a recruiter? If so, you can have him/her email you a pdf of the new contract.

yup, nuts. i'll just scan it and email it. i suspect what actually was said in the official documentwas something like

print it out for the NSET so they dont make any mistakes. Dont email it to them as they might f*** it up.

or similar. one of my friends will get a copy, i'll grab it from them. But i'll scan mine anyway and make a pdf. i suspect its my useless manager

I've used that scanned pdf more times than I can remember. Whenever there's a contractual issue, I bring it up and show my coteacher both the Korean and English. It's invaluable.

Usually you sign a couple copies, send them to SMOE, then SMOE sends one back to you, no? Seems there's some mis-communication. Don't freak out, just be patient and try to sort it out.

there is no real miscommunication. i asked if i could have a copy on file for refrence in the future. and my handler told me that i couldn't have one. that the official document that came from a higher source (either SMOE or Seobu Education Office, i dont know) actually stated not to give the NSET an electronic copy. My co teacher who is fluent in English was doing the translating for me. She's baffled too.

I'm not overly freaking out, just I want to know exactly what kind of organization does that

Please don't take my advise as a personal attack, I'm just trying to help and I think it's wise to remain calm. It's the summer, you're renewing so naturally you must be a bit tired and ready for a break from Korea and teaching, that's all.

I thought you said they wouldn't give you a file, but it seems you meant that they wouldn't give you an electronic copy...so the mis-communication is clearly with me.

Are you on smoeworld?

youre supposed to have three original contacts signed by both you and your employer. one for you, one for your employer and one for immigration.

im not overly stressed out. or thinking your attacking me. its just my question in reality is 'why can't i have an electronic copy of my contract' seeing as how easy it would be to make one with a scanner or digital camera. i know that there are 3 hard copies, and i know where they are going.

if im coming over as stressed and pissed off, then im not overly so (at least i dont intend or mean to be). i just wanna hear some ideas as to why i am specifically forbid having a copy of it for future easy reference.

and yup, i'm on smoe world

an electronic copy is utterly pointless unless it is a scan of a contact with both signatures on it.....even then it would have no more legal status than a photocopy - which would be none.

I understand the principles of law. but not wanting to carry around the signed original with me at all times. rather keep it in a a safe place then when i need to look at my contract, i can do so simply look online, if the issue becomes large or serious. then i drag out the signed original. thats got a lot of use to me

If you know a good recruiter, they have sample copies of your contract. The one that mine sent to me doesn't have the chops on it but it is exactly the same. I use it to show my coteacher certain aspects, but I bring in the hard copy if there's a real issue. It's safer having a scan that I can copy and paste for email, though.
