I'm not against a beer at the white plastic tables outside a Family Mart, its cool that its unrestricted.
But as a place to spend your evening getting drunk on the cheap, its ugly. How many Koreans can you spot doing that? Meanwhile, lots are strolling past observing & forming unflattering opinions of foreign teachers.
Go to a bar. |

And Korean men never do that, right?
In fact, if I look outside my window, I can see a table of 4 K men doing it right now. They are there 3-4 times a week.
I don't care what the collective K small mind thinks of us. No one else should either. |

Spending the whole evening getting hammered outside a convenience store is indeed quite sad. It should be seen as a rare and random circumstance to even spend more than an hour outside those places.
Definitely not a planned night out! |

A few casuals...fine, but making a night of it is just trashy and spreads further bad sentiment towards foreigners. |

One of my friends is getting ready to leave and had never even sat down at one of those tables, so we made a special plan to do so. We were there for an hour or so before we moved the party to a friend's apartment. Beer gets warm too fast in this weather! |

Foreigners do it too. There is a Family Mart in my neighborhood where foreigners sometimes hang out over a Hite or whatever other craptastic Korean drink in a green glass bottle or white plastic bottle they prefer while talking, strumming a guitar, and looking on. It's OK if you are peaceful and not harassing women, but I sense the scene involving of a gaggle of foreigners makes Koreans noticeably uncomfortable, but not outright objective to it. |

If they're harrassing women, that's no good. However, if they're just doing their thing and Koreans are uncomfortable, that sounds like their problem.

I'd say if the group gets bigger than the seats that are available, it becomes unclassy and take it to a bar. Otherwise, drink away, as long as you aren't obnoxious. |

I guess it is pathetic to booze at these places for more than a round or two. Yes, adjosshis hit them up regularly for a round of soju and dried squid, but they usually aren't around for more than an hour or so. I've seen waygooks (shockingly I know) hang at these places for 4-5 hours, often cat-calling the dames in the process. Seems a little sad considering that the 500cc's aren't all that much more expensive at a bar, though I guess if you must buy anju it ups the total. |

I don't know. I know it may seem uncouth, but being outside in the "fresh" air can be considerably more pleasant than sitting in a dark, smelly bar with crappy music. You generally have a better selection of beer and food as well.
Cat calling is just stupid regardless of the circumstances, but I see nothing wrong with having a few rounds outside. |

I don't view it as ugly or low brow or anything like that. It seems like something that people do in Korea, and seems like a great story to tell when you're back home. "Ahh, back in Korea we used to get hooched up at a 7-11 on the rickety old chairs and plastic tables they'd put out for just that." No?
It's not something I'd do back home, but I also wouldn't yogiyo a waitress back home either. |
