I'm thinking of going to Korea, but I want to be sure that I pass the medical, so I'm going to get tested before heading over. I'd like to go to my doctor with a little more than "Can you test me for every infectious disease?"

In the case of immigration they are SPECIFICALLY looking for:
STDs,
HIV/AIDS
TB
Hep A,B,C
or other CHRONIC infectious diseases
and
evidence of drug and/or alcohol abuse

when you say they are looking for STDs, do they give you (for women) the whole pelvic exam? not sure i'm comfortable with that if so.

What does the medical exam actually entail?

I work for public school, which does the most in-depth testing, as it's a gov't position.

My hospital took 4 vials and a cup of urine. I asked why the 4 vials:
1 for the AIDS test
1 for my liver function
1 for my cholesterol
1 for blood type (which I could have just TOLD them)

Urine was for a drug screening. It's basic.

They also did an x-ray for TB, which I was unhappy about, because I could have had a less-dangerous skin test, but they prefer radiation. Lovely...

Yes, the TB test is rediculous. The reason is simple. If you need a TB xray you'd be in the final stages ie) near fatal and you'd be coughing blood. having a chest x-ray every time you move jobs is not only moronic it's adding to your yearly exposure to ionizing radiation, and a chest X-ray is NOT a small dose by any means ( granted the xray lasts for less than a second). Also considering radiologists don't use lead aprons for the other parts of your body here... I call the safety of the TB test into question.

It's my first year here in Korea - I had the same feeling about the chest xray as you're saying here. I'm wondering what "exposure" levels are considered safe and what sources of information are out there on it (specific to Korea)?

Also, if I stay with the public school system do I have to repeat the chest x-ray every year?

As far as I'm aware, the only STD they check for is HIV/AIDS. I know there is no pelvic exam for women and I assume there is no check for men. If the government ever tried to require pelvic exams as part of the job physical, they would just not have any female teachers. I, for one, would refuse to have one, plain and simple. They can probably test your blood for them, but I doubt they will. I also had 4 vials of blood taken and wondered why. It makes sense now that I see NYC_Gal's list. I think the government just wants to check you for drugs and major infectious diseases.

I agree, the chest x-ray is a little much. Do they do TB skin tests here? Maybe they do the chest x-ray just so they can have everything done in one day.

The medical check is pretty standard. I work for a Public School in Seoul and it was everything that had been mentioned earlier (drug test, HIV/Aids, Chest X-Ray, etc...) No STD check except for the HIV/Aids check so don't stress. The health check is really quick and not really evasive at all. Good Luck!! Cool

Do they show you your chest X-ray? (I'm actually excited about the prospect of getting one if I go. Broke my ribs a few months ago and never bothered to go to a doctor so I'm curious to see if it'll show up Laughing )
