Maybe someone can help me with this...
My contract states that I will teach 120 hours per month, 30 hours per week, and 6 hours per day. For the last two months I've had two days a week where I was teaching 6 hours and 50 minutes (this is actual teaching time I'm talking, not including breaks). As of July 19th summer intensives will be starting, which means that I'll be teaching 7 hours and 40 minutes, and another day that I'll be teaching 6 hours and 50 minutes.
Am I correct in thinking that this violates my contract, or does the 6 hour per day thing mean nothing? I know if I bring it up with my principal she's most likely going to say she called her lawyer friend and she's in the right (not the first time). Do I have any recourse?
Thanks. |

Silly question that. Do your hours exceed 30 per week? If so, you're entitled to overtime. Just mention that to the director.

Sorry, I should have clarified: the hours don't exceed 30 per week, but they do exceed 6 per day. The 6 per day is stated clearly in the contract, but the school blatantly ignores it even though I've brought it up before. |

So you're sometimes working 7 hours, sometimes working 5 or so? If that adds up to 30, what's the big deal? Seriously now, give a little, get a little.
Now if it's over 30, then yes, ask for overtime. That's always cool. That nice extra bit of money, you can get. |

If you're teaching less than 30 hours per week you're pretty much screwed...while it might appear to breach the contract, you won't get any authority to force them to pay you overtime on a daily basis.
In this case it's best to suck it up, go get a CELTA, and then move up to a better job next time.
You have to pick your battles at the hagwon...and in this case you're best to just let it slide and wait for something bigger and more important to put your foot down about. |

It matters because I signed a contract that has me teaching between 9 AM and 8 PM under the premise that I would be teaching 6 hours per day. Teaching from 9:30-6:30 without a break kills me. |

Are you teaching 9 hours a day? If so, then yes, that is to much. If you're teaching 6 hours a day, with prep time, that isn't to bad. Your story just changed a bit there also. |

How so? My contract says 6 teaching hours between the hours of 9 AM and 8 PM. As I said in my original post, I'm teaching (not including prep time) 7 hours and 40 minutes two days a week and 6 hours and 50 minutes one day a week. |

If you work more than 30 hours a week, yes a problem. Else wise. Not a problem. |

Then why does the contract say 6 hours per day? Standard hagwon shadiness? |

It isn't shady. The over riding term here is 30 hours per week, the 6 hours per week at 5 days is an average. |

When the contract already says 30 hours per week there is no reason for it to give an average. |

You're thinking as a westerner. This IS Korea mate. Think like a Korean. There's plenty of reason for such information in a contract. |

11, and I'm unsurprised, I'd just like to get overtime if they're going to have me teaching that much, particularly given that with all my other responsibilities (lots of classes without books - all prep) this likely means I'm staying after hours to do my prep/lesson plans/report cards etc. |
