Hell yes to Agalloch! I've never been much of a fan of the vocals, though.

I do love a bit of metal now and then. Particular favourites include Beecher, Palehorse, Strapping Young Lad, SikTh, Neurosis, and Genghis Tron.

I'd like there to be more sci-fi metal just sans screaming/dark growling. Does such a thing exist?

Iron Maiden, Somewhere in Time
Fear Factory, Demanufacture
Godflesh, Streetcleaner

You're not a metalhead too are you, Dear old Serge?

I am a little, yes, but I'm very eclectic.

I have that Godflesh album on CD, could never get into it. Then again, not too into industrial metal as it is.

Seems everyone is a metalhead these days... : (

Takes a while to get into, but it's one of my favorite records.

I'm not generally a fan either. Ministry, for example - garbage.

I gave Samael's Ceremony Of Opposites a spin again today, it never disappoints.

And considering that I bought the album as soon as it was released well over ten years ago, that is saying something.

God I miss going to shows and stuff. I always used to see old Children of Bodom videos and always assumed that metal artists came to Korea alot. Really like Meshuggah, Behemoth, Slayer, Mastodon, Strapping Young Lad. Miss seeing GWAR, not the most talented band but really like the live show. Dorthy you might want to look into folk metal. Not too many scfi references, but I like my metal with violins and bagpipes sometimes.

Black Breath: I grew up with a couple of these guys. good friends. They've been in a few different bands, year ago got signed to SOUTHERN LORD. Toured with SUNN0))))). Hardcore/crust/metal. ala Entombed + His Hero is Gone + At the Gates.

I just deleted a poorly written paragraph. Done writing. Give these guys a listen.

God, I remember going to their show in Seattle about two years ago. Completely amazing performance. My ears were were blown for about a week. Loved it.

A few more things to add to this thread:

I'm listening to The Mantle now, at a coffee shop here in Mokpo. Music, as an effect that I'm sure is shared by many people, usually brings me back to a time where I either first heard the music, or listened to it a large amount. Can't say enough about what "The Hawthorne Passage" does to cue my nostalgia.

Has anyone been following Devin Townsend the last few years? Since the breakup of Strapping, he's been putting together some great material, and is setting up what he'll be creating/producing/performing in the coming years. Ki was amazing, and Addicted was just as well. And I'll be meeting the guy in a few months in Seattle! Truly an asset to the metal community, even if you didn't enjoy Strapping, or his solo material, or his collaborations in the industry. I definitely urge anyone who doesn't know too much about his work to investigate it, with Strapping Young Lad Alien or his solo material (suggestions in the latter include Ocean Machine, Synchestra, or Infinity, for starters). He's one of my favorites, and I'm excited for his future contributions to music in general, not just metal.

Also, there was a rumor that Varg Vikernes (Burzum) has/had a Twitter account. I fucking love that. Authentic or not, I love that.

Never really understood the Black Metal scene. Too old school I guess. Anyway, wasn't this Varg character convicted of murder? I think he was also a Nazi for a bit. Never understood the attraction.

He still defends that it was in self-defense. There was a lot of turmoil and, in my opinion, general paranoia in Mayhem at the time of Euronymous' death. Varg thought he was going to kill him, so he struck first. And before that, there was Dead's suicide. What a way to go. Even apologized for making a mess with his brains. The picture became quite popular. Here's a fanciful quote from Bard of Emperor:

"He (Dead) wasn't a guy you could know very well. I think even the other guys in Mayhem didn't know him very well. He was hard to get close to. I met him two weeks before he died. I'd met him maybe six to eight times, all in all. He had lots of weird ideas. I remember Aarseth was talking about him and said he did not have any humor. He did, but it was very obscure. Honestly, I don't think he was enjoying living in this world"

As for the Nazi stuff, he always maintained himself as an advocate of vengeance from history, to put it in one way. Have a look at his wiki; it's quite interesting.

Seems to me that BM like Rap is more about ego than artistic merit.
