Yes!! Very happy with a Spain win. They had more chances than Holland I thought. Holland tried strong arm tactics in the first half also..DeJong should have been sent off and perhaps Van Bommel too.
The first half was boring but the last half hour and extra time was actually pretty good. |

I read alot over on the Guardian message boards as well and this seems to be the consensus.
I thought the last 60 mins tonight was pretty good. Also the knockout stages of this tournament have been good also. Very few games decided by penalties and a decent amount of goals.
The ball really has to take some of the blame. It has been slated by absolutely everyone. I've never seen so many free kicks go over, so many passes over hit on the ground and in the air. |

| Well Howard Webb put the icing on England's contribution to this World Cup. I'm glad Spain won but that was a poor game basically. |

| I actually think this tournament was worse than 2002. While the offciating was abysmal then as well at least an exciting team won it all. |

Yea but how good would Brazil 02 do in this world cup. I feel like there were just better teams at this world cup over all. Not that they couldn't have won this world cup, they would just have to have beaten better teams playing much more negative tactics. I think even Brazil 10 would give Brazil 02 a run for their money.
I also think Spain are an exciting team, they were just a notch below their best, were a little cagy due to it being a world cup and played a succession of teams who parked the bus/employed dirty tactics.
I also thought they should have started Fabregas instead of Alonso throughout but that is a different matter. Here is the 3-0 and 4-1 wins from 2008 against Russia who were a very good team.

I honestly believe that if any team tried to play Spain straight up at a game at football, they would get destroyed. This World Cup has just been one long indication off that.

| We might get to see a more exciting Spain in the next world cup. They will still have a lot of this squad and by all reports the conveyor belt is still rolling. There are a few young guys at Barca who are very exciting. |

Germany seem to have already been installed as favourites for that. A little early but they'll be good. Brazil will be at home and hungry to reclaim the trophy on their home turf. I could easily see Spain as good or better in the next one too. But to be fair, although they have been the best team they've not been all that spectacular. Lacking someone to take on a few players and not hitting the target enough for me.
England will probably still be guff. I think the game will change somewhat over the next 4 years, goal line technology seems inevitable and it wouldn't surprise me if we see video replays.
This World Cup has been entertaining but falls well short of a classic. For me 2006 was better. There was more going on. You had Zidane's unbelievable swansong, crazy matches like Ghana vs Czech Republic, and madness such as that Portugal Holland (think it was Holland) game which turned into a bloodbath.
There have been some ridiculous decisions here that tarnished a lot of matches. France, Italy and England all played terribly and disappointed. Some of the promising underdogs came up a bit short too and there weren't many memorable matches. The fact that Spain were the best team but won all their post group games 1-0 speaks volumes. The way Holland approached that game tonight was disgraceful, especially with the attacking talent they have.
On the radio they were already suggesting some rules might need changing if they want to get the scorelines back up.
I thought all the talk of the ball was whining but it has stuck and it did seem to be floating off a lot, hence the lack of classic goals. Too many goalkeeping errors seemed to stem from it too.
Anyway, it has been an entertaining month if not a classic. |

Well, Spain are essentially the worlds best team, but they are also supremely and famously underpeformers. They have been the best for a while but they have a big weakness that is goal scoring. They're very short range all the time, with one exception, which is not good news against teams like Germany who are like defensive locusts, due to their intense fear of playing Spain.
Anyone else notice that Germany had at least 7 players defending at any given time the Spaniards had the ball? Germany were terrified... But yeah they will never be massive goal scorers, they will simply score enough. |

Dutch should have won but Robben hesitated and missed 2 cracking chances. he made similar mistakes in earlier games- nudging the ball directly at the keeper. Villa didn't perform either. |

The dutch were dire. Their main tactic, literally, was to attack and try to injure all the key players. They were terrified, as Germany were, but their disgraceful idea, as it was against Brazil in the 60's and 70's, was the knock them down in order to gain a chance.
They had some good shots in but they were outplayed, even by a sub-par performance by Spain, until the extra time, where they were essentially destroyed. The goal outcome does not give an overall picture of the game. Spain are just not a big striking team.
It was the most disgraceful football I've ever seen. |

Seriously though he has been the backbone of the Uruguay team. personally I want germany to hammer them because I disliked the suarez handball. |
I felt like that too, until but found myself forgiving them when they gave Holland a good run for their money. I half wonder if they would have beaten the Oranje if Saurez had been their to back Forlan up. Forlan got himself into some great positions, but his team often failed to get the ball to him - something that Saurez was good at.
Initally I was really disappointed that Ghana lost out - but finally I felt Uraguay really brought something great to the semi-finals and the play off for third place.
Look forward to seeing Uraguay in the next cup. Hope Goldie Locks will be there again!  |

They should have had TWO players sent off in the first half - if I remember it right. Did they go to South Africa to practice their Kung Fu? And later in the game, Spain committed a foul that would have seen them red-carded by some refs.
What a dirty game!
I know how you feel about going into extra time. By that time I was exhausted, and I finally nodded off about 25 minutes into extra time - just before the one bloody goal of the match!!! DAMN IT!!! |
