Is is possible to camp away from the camp grounds in Korea. Slightly off the
trail but on the mountains? Camping in the camp grounds with K brats
and their parents saying "hello" to me isn't much different from normal
day life...except in a tent.

Ideally I'd just like to find a very quiet place set up camp and be alone for a few days?

possible?

Thanks.

Went camping with some friends this weekend on the beach at Samcheok. From what I gathered there were no concerns from the authorities. I'd say as long as you aren't on National park or privately owned property, nobody will care.

I've done this successfully and semi successfully, but I was fishing so I mostly camped next to a river. It is much more difficult in the summer.

Having the time to explore beforehand (and this holds true for everywhere in Korea - whatever you are doing) makes it much easier. You can then suss out areas, traffic, accommodation - in this case, camping. I camped exclusively in Gangwando, on the Naerimcheon and other rivers. If you have a car - and I assuming you do, or will rent one - it is possible to find a small river valley and drive along it to see where others are camping. Then find the smallest place that can accommodate you and your confreres without leaving much room for anyone else.

Most people (families) camp and swim in the flat areas of rivers, on the valley bottom. If you find a river which winds up into the hills, you will likely be able to find a spot higher up where there are few or no people.

There was one place next to a road which was mostly a day camp place but was empty of people most of the three times I was there. At the far end of the road there was even a spot with flat deep water and cliffs opposite. The shore was mostly flat and had a sandy beach.

I am sure there are others.
