|
|
I heard they start out at 2.5 mil a month, but do they have a pay scale that increases for experience(I have two so far) like SMOE?
Anyone have a link to their website or a sample contract? At least tell me the pay scale.
Also, I've heard some interesting things said about this Manpal Sahota fellow who does the interviewing(or hiring)....any advice? Is he by chance Indian(Out of curiosity)?
Lastly, for those of you at gangnam schools, is there any opportunity for after school overtime work? My SMOE school set me up pretty well and did so for my friends too so I was making about 3.1 million...
As for the 900,000 deposit, do you think it will find a good place in gangnam if I drop 10-15 million key money? |

When I started there I got 2.6 from memory.... experience counts in the gangnam district. You get a small payrise every year unless they don't like you.. I actually finished after 6 months.. my prinicipal disliked me a lot( didn't like me taking sick days and poor and wrong info from co-teachers) .. and that was when I talked with Manpal for the first time.. no word from my school .. just he called me up on Monday evening and said that I was fired and I would need to be out of my house by Saturday and Friday would be my last day at school... fired at 5months 3 weeks.. yeah nice. No warnings either.
But I've heard from others that he is an ok guy. Just not too organised on the work front.
There is an op to get extra money.. my school paid me cash for a play the school was doing.. helped with it for two months and got an envelope.. though it to be odd at the time..
You can also do after school progs in other schools and your own if it has one.. they often email the teachers with extra work etc.. sometimes even teaching other teachers at certain locations.
It might have changed a bit this year... but I assume they still do it like that~ good money if you take the housing money and live out of gangnam otherwise... almost the better to be in SMOE doing afterschool etc I do GEPIK and afterschool and actually make more than I did in gangnam and have a longer vacation.. easy classes...shorter camps... etc.. but that depends on your school... gangnam has 6 weeks of camp .. 3 weeks summer, 3 weeks winter.
That's about all I got for ya ~ ^^; |

I'm curious as to how you applied to Gangnam Public Schools. I've been wading through countless job posts on Dave's and haven't found anything from them! |

had a friend there and they gave me the email addy for the co-ordinator....however, she has since left gangnam....I just emailed her saying when I wanted to start and she found me a job... they don't need to advertise as current teachers can usually find friends for jobs etc.. they tend to ask around before advertising.. but have seen some ads on daves.
You need to get someone to refer you.. I prob can't as I had probs at my school .. so I wouldn't be a good reference LOL

Any advice on the interview for anyone who's done it?
To the guy asking about applying directly, they're full already....I'm only being interviewed last minute thanks to a friend working there, long story. Wait for the ad to show up again around October or November....they advertise, just nowhere near as much as gepik or Epik since they hire far fewer.
Calling them directly is likely to get you nowhere unless you magically manage to get them at the right time they need to fill a vacancy....they don't exactly like folks contacting them directly.
In regards to Money, I was asking if you get more IF you join and have experience.
I have two years experience, will I get a 200,000+ pay bump over a newbie from day one? Or is it 2.5 starting for everyone? Does a TEFL boost your pay like it does in EPIK, SMOE, GEPIK?
Does Gangnam deskwarm or does it depend on the school.....now SMOE has six weeks of mandatory camps too. |

If you got the hookup like you say, just interview there like you would for any other place. Express your strong points as a teacher and give examples of what you have accomplished teaching ESL in Korea. The fact that you have 2 years experience might be a hinderence as apposed to a bonus, as per your previous posts; you were not re-signed by SMOE this time around.
If they want you, you will get the pay scale and contract discussed at that time of your interview most likely. If they don't have an interest in you, then....Good luck with it and keep us posted. |

Sorry. BS on this one. They advertised for their Feb/Mar intake on this site. I applied, got the interview after sending in my lesson plan etc. but in the end turned it down.
Also, a friend of mine interviewed about 6 weeks ago. Saw the add here. Didnt know anyone already in Gangnam. Got offered and accepted.
Of course they ask their current teachers if they know anyone. But Manpal needs to get paid to do something so they do have an interview process and an advertising budeget. The money is there to be spent so why not spend it.
They probably have finished for the September intake. Just have to wait until December, January before they start advertising for March 2011. |

Ummm... sorry but wasn't trying to say they don't advertise .. I actually said they don't need to.. ^^
Truth is when I got a job they co-ordinator wasn't Manpal he started just before I finished and at that time many people got jobs through word of mouth.. was the easiest and fastest way.
I just sent a few emails.. and sent in a plan and called them up and they placed me. It was quite simple and it was because a friend vouched for me and I had good experience.
They do advertise but not as much as other programs do... just saying~
MP position may differ from the previous co-ordinator ... I'm not too sure what he does .. but our co-ordinator taught the teachers and basically kept us in the loop and checked plans etc... advertising was a very small part of her job from what I could see. ( cause she had soo much else to do)
But it def helps if you know someone because many of the teachers in the program stay for more than 3 years... I know a few who have been there for yonks ~
Good thing is experience does count for a lot... no prior PS work was needed when I applied.
Better to get some good info from someone in the system now~
And re . deskwarming.. someone was asking.. I never did any.
Oh and re contacting them .. you are right they don't like to be contacted by randoms.. that is why I suggest you get someone to refer you.
Cheers~ |

Sorry, I know this is a bit old. But anyways, the Korean coordinator actually passed away from cancer a bit ago. the British woman who was co-coordinator was good and well organised. I've kept in touch with her over the years as well.
I tried to go back to GNUCR, but had issues with my FBI check, when I emailed Manpal, all he said was "ok" That was his whole email, which I thought was rude, so I dropped it. I'm happy with my job, just wanted to give people a heads up that things may have changed a lot. He does write for KOTESOL though.
Pay was 2.6 when I worked there in 2007-2008, the exchange rate was better than and I got free housing.
On another note, they have an adult programme, If you go to www.gnucr.org you can see the info about it. Pay starts at 2.65 mil |
