I have one like NYCgal, and I often toss a handful of raisins and some edamame in with the rice when it's nearly cooked. The raisins plump nicely and absorb a fair bit of the water. Mix a quick vinaigrette and chop some peppers and green onions. When the rice is done cooking, stir it all together, and you've got a pretty decent rice salad. This will work with pretty much any grain or combo of veggies and varies immensely depending on what I've got on hand. |

^I'm dying to try that raisin recipe, but with quinoa. Does anyone know where I could get the stuff? I'm going to start a high protein grain diet, and am going to try cutting out brown rice for a few weeks. Doing a detox (salad, seafood, and loads of water and green tea extract) and this sounds really yummy! |

You don't live anywhere near Iksan, do you? I have 2 for sale and they both work fine. One for 10,000won and one for 5000won. Pretty much identical but one is newer and shinier. |
I live in Chuncheon which I don't think is anywhere near Iksan. But if you feel like lugging a rice cooker to Seoul, I will be happy to meet you there and buy it from you! |

You do know that "detoxing" doesn't actually do anything. Don't you? |

It probably won't turn out to be the cheapest option but if all else fails, bob's red mill ships internationally.http://www.bobsredmill.com/organic-quinoa-grain.html
Just to get the thread back on topic, I also find rice cookers, even the simple ones, great for cooking dried beans. |

I used the word detox in a different way than you think. I'm not cleansing my colon or anything like that! I just want to stop munching on carbs at night, and it takes a few weeks for the cravings to cease (like with anything your body gets used to.) |

I don't really care about cheap. I just want to stop craving muesli or chocolate at night. Night time snacking is something I never did back home, but the high carb diet here has triggered late night cravings, and I'd rather "detox" (not meant in the same way that the hollywood starlets mean it) by going cold turkey on the starch for a couple of weeks. My personal trainer back home used to swear by quinoa, and I do like the stuff. I make it in a rice maker, add some chopped up apples, random spices, and cucumber and serve it cold.
Thanks for the linke! |

I just learned a new one:
Yogurt!
I sterilized a bowl, added some room temperature milk and a little room temperature yogurt (unsweetened goat yogurt, but any should do), and covered it with plastic wrap.
I put about an inch of water in the ricemaker and put the bowl into that, plugged it in but didn't press the cook button, only left it on the warming feature.
One hour on warming, then don't open it! Let it sit for 3-7 hours (the longer, the tangier), then still don't open it! One more hour on warming, then you've got yummy plain yogurt! I brought some to school and added a little honey. The rest is in my fridge, and I may try adding fruit or preserves, in lieu of sugar. This is great! I hope you like it |
