|
|
It's quite simple, really - their ATMs don't work!
Almost a year ago, soon after I had arrived, I tried to withdraw money from the Pusan Bank ATM near my house. I chose to use the "English" menu. Tried to withdraw money, and the machine reset. The money that I tried to withdraw never came out of the machine, but I was deducted for the amount. Had to get my co-worker to phone them and raise hell, and later the amount was put back into my account.
One short week later, the same damn machine ate my VISA card! Again, had to get my co-worker to phone the bank, and they dispatched the security bloke to come and get me back my card.
The only pattern I noticed was that I was using the same machine, and that I was selecting the "English" menu (rather than using Korean).
So I chose to play it safe, and started to withdraw money from a Su-hyeob Bank ATM close to my house, using the Korean menu. Haven't had a problem in almost 11 months with their ATM.
Anyway, yesterday I'm Nampo-dong (nowhere near the ATM near my house), and I try to withdraw money from a Pusan Bank ATM (as nothing else was around). Guess what happens. The machine resets. I don't get any money, but my account is deducted for the amount I tried to get.
Currently in the process of having Pusan Bank sort out the mess and credit my account with the amount taken (for the second time in less than a year!).
TO MAKE THE STORY SHORT: Pusan Bank ATM + English menu = BIG TROUBLE.
Additionally, taking money out from ATMs outside of Busan at night can be a pain in the arse if you bank with Pusan Bank, especially way up in places such as Seoul.
If I could have done it all again, I'd have used Kookmin Bank instead.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! |

| I have the same problem of getting money off hours from Daegu Bank. When I am in the States, in the opposite time zone, its really a problem. But isn't this a general problem with Korean banks? |

Yes it is. After I first came here I sent my ATM card home to my mother. It was so she could take the excess money from my Korean account whenever needed. Downside was she could only go at night. Even the ATM in my hood (KB) has a metal screen that automatically slides down at 10pm and covers the ATM until morning.
And, considering that the city is now Busan, why is it still Pusan Bank and Pusan National University (there are even a few govenment signs that still sport the old P). |

| If you had registered a company name with the old English spelling, you can keep it. |

| A lot of convenience stores (at least here in Capital City) have installed bank ATM's (as distinguished from the credit card-accepting ones you see in the subway stations) that will allow to withdraw cash from your account at later hours, albeit at a nominal fee. |

| Oh man the Pusanbank ATMs! I have the same trouble all the time. It seems to be worse at busy times. I have got the receipt with the amount I wanted to withdraw but it hasn't actually been deducted from my balance thank God. My wife hates Kookmin bank, apparently their service sucks and they charge too many fees. |

Why would you use a city bank anyways?
Kookmin or KEB are the only banks in this country I trust. They have never failed me yet either. |

Has anyone found a bank in Busan that accepts Visa cards (Canadian) for a cash advance? I haven't got paid yet...
Also, do you have a recommendation for a bank here? |
