with whom i must share an apartment.
now while the first three or four days was this awkward prejudice rant about how everyone from Mexico, China and japan was an idiot and the cultures were all fooked up. He's taught in 7 different hagwons and never finished a contract.
HE's 42 yrs old and has bragged that he's had over 50 jobs in his life.
first question: How can this guy continue to go through life and not think "Boy isn't it strange how the only common denominator for all the problems in my life is me?"
Anyways...i like my school. Crappy textbooks aside, they've been very honest with me and he's a shitty teacher.
HE isn't a good teacher....he screams at them and makes a point of belittling them.
I want him out. The school wants him out. And he kinda wants out b./c he doesn't want to write report cards or test the kids. When asked to come to school 1hr before to prep, he whined a lot.
I thought guys like this were a myth.

I have a lot more respect for all you people who've had crazy roomates or coteachers.

i'll have more anecdotes when i get home but the computer needs to be put to REAL use now

I sympathise khyber, sounds pretty tough on you.. i pity anyone who has to share a room, full stop. let alone with such a loser..
Sounds like you don't have much choice.
you could push things to a head by fighting with the guy and refusing to work at the hagwon if he does; you or him. But if you've too much to lose (shared appt and all that,) you'll just have to sit it out until he shoots himself in the foot properly.
I've shared rooms with idiots aplenty before, normally in trashy youth hostels while I'm backpacking.. can be tough. The only way to win is to be more of a psycho than they are so, they're the ones who want to leave.
Difficult....very difficult. Sometimes such people only appear that way when you first know them. they come good later on when you get to know them properly.
I'm 31 by the way and have had 67 jobs. But I'm a cool guy, i just had too much wanderlust when I was younger, and am probably the nicest roommate anyone could wish for!!!

Well, it's symptomatic of restless vagabonds to complain about their jobs.
Sounds like he has the itch to change jobs again. Your school had to have
been desperate to hire someone with his lack of credentials. Perhaps, your
boss was looking for a companion to share a bottle or two of soju with. He
may have been disappointed to learn that your colleague refuses to touch
the stuff and prefers a swig of Jim Beam. I guess your colleague has just a
little time left to perfect his students' pronunciation drills in stuttering and
burping. Cool

Does the guy have a visa?

He sounds like a guy that used to work for my old school near Gangbyeon/Techno-Mart in Seoul last year (he replaced me when I left). He lasted 6 months there, but the director was wanting to get rid of him at 2.

Originally, my director was all fired-up about hiring him because he had benn an actor in some korean movies. Two months later, my director was wanting me to come back.

I only ask about the visa because my old director refuses to give him a release letter because he owes him money or something.

to continue:
This guy has a real communication problem; he seems unable to tease people. He goes right for the groin first shot. He's told me 4 times that i'm not much of a teacher, and then goes and uses my lesson plans (see the thread about my crappy textbook).

Luckily, our house is huge (35pyoung) and my room is the same size as my whole apartment last year (plus i have internet in my room).

As for his employment:
It's kinda funny. Some of his recent gems:
1) at his first staff meeting, our WJN said that the market in our small town is getting competitive so we have to do a few more little things to make the school better (things like "report cards and tests"). Frankly, i don't see why we haven't had tests for the last 1.5 yrs.
As soon as it's brought up, he starts bitching...for about 5mins....ending his diatribe with "I catagorically OBJECT to writing reports. In fact, I refuse to write reports or give standardized tests to my children and that's how it is"
That freaked out the WJN a bit (just b/c he was yelling).
By the end of the meeting, he said "Well, if i have to shave my beard[with about a week's growth, I will tender my resignation right now".
Now, what is strange about that is that he SHAVED his beard for the job interview to look presentable. I figure, "you wanna have a beard, you know the deal, this is sk...you gotta have it so your school knows what to expect".

He's been here for a week and a day and the school decided before his contract even TECHNICALLY started that they wanted to fire him. So now they are trying to figure out how to do it (shouldn't be that hard, he still hasn't got his visa) being honest and not mean. Probably one of the few schools in korea that would do that.

I'm hoping that he may be gone by the end of this week.
he told me that he was teetering b.n this job and a job at a girls middle school. When he got the contract (too late), yesterday, he complained, "I could be teaching at a girls middle school with millions of .......to...chase after". He realized he was saying something incriminating so he trailed off.

He needs someone to sit him down and give him a lecture...and not coddle him. But it ain't gonna be this school and it ain't gonna be me.
Too bad this guy is so messed up.

Oh man I know people like that. Odd how every job they land, the boss always turns out to be an ahole and the company is fuked and the comptroller is probably ripping people off and the coworkers are all jerks and... it's never his/her fault, is it?

How many times have those words scrolled across my brain? Too many, each and every year I was in Korea. And I know I'm not the only one. There are a lot of great people in Korea, but there are also a hell a lot of losers. I guess I'm not saying anything new, I just liked the title of your thread...

I wonder if its the interview and hiring requirements that are flawed?

I too have seen and worked with drunks... funny though that as soon as I had input into the hiring we havent had one.

I think as a native speaker we "sometimes" have the ability to read between the lines of an applicant (especially if you did it back home) and try to weed out ppl like this.

to the OP.. man, I'd press him abit if I were you. Get him to commit to quiting if he has to shave or something. Make him take a stance.. hehe.

Too bad you're living with him.

I'm pretty forward with people like this. I'd basically tell him he's a goofball and a loser, and I'd go on the record with the hagwon if it ever went to the labor board or he tried to make a stink.

Would depend on what mood I was in.

The school needs to give him 30 days notice immediately, and then he will probably fly away on his own.

thanks for all the words of encouragement.

My fiance is living with me (and has been for the whole year). Her father is also here. My fiance's brother was an alcoholic and went through 12 steps. He's doign great.

The topic has been brushed around the new teacher but he gets uncomfortable and quiet and quickly chanes the topic.

i'm going to take this out of context, if a may.

There are a LOT of teachers here who like to drink...even probably a few who could be definitively alcoholics. But their personalities aren't at ALL objectionable...some of them are even more pleasant when they're a little bit toasty.
But at 1pm this guy will say "Maaaaaannn...i neeed a beer" when our puppy pissed on the floor. I'm cleaning it up......but he seems just broken by it...

I would LOVE to be forward with this guy....but i'm gonna wait, i'm pretty sure he's gonna be leaving soon. AND i'm almost finished

funny you asked. No...our school has had 4 teachers and they've ALL BEEN GREAT! The problem is that:
1) though he had been looking for a month, only 4 or 5 people got to the second stage of the hiring process (a second call and the return of a signed contract). Most people were interested and then bailed for a school in a bigger city. Basically, the personel director had 4 days to find a new teacher and this was the only interview lined up.
2) I wasn't there. I've made it CLEAR that for all subsequent interviews a foreigner should be in the room. AFter all, i have to live with the twit.
3) in the interview, the PD asked him, "...., do you drink?"
his reply was "yeah...a little bit...maybe a bottle of beer every night or so." Well, it's considerably more than that...hovering around 2-3 bottles of soju. He stinks, though his dog is great! my fiance, father in law and i have all decided we like the dog more than him.

I'm trying to gently push him out...aggrevate his sore points (preparing, tests, calls etc....). I KNOW the school is going to fire him...but i would like them to do it while i'm around. We'll see i guess.

59 more days of sharing a house (enough reason, for me, not to make too big a stink...)

I think you should just ask for separate accomodation. i fthe boss says no as he surely will, he'll eventually have to move you if things become bad. I shared with 2 guys last year, they ended up fighting and punching eachoether, WJN dismissed it as a forgettable soju incident, but when one of them came in to work with a black eye he finally found an alternative appt...
If it starts to affect your appearance, performance or punctuality at work, the boss will act quickly when he has to...
