So I work in the Gangwon Province for a public school. I am under the 2009-2010 EPIK contract . It states :" If the Employee successfully completes his/her duties set forth in contract for the full Term of Employment specifically herein, the Employee shall be entitled to an Exit allowance of 1.3 million Korean won within one month of successful completion of the Term of Employment." Now the director of my county is saying since I am staying in Korea , I cannot get it. I am not renewing my contract. I am starting a new position on Sept. 1 with GEPIK. My current contract ends August 26 , but my visa ends August 19. What can I do? My original recrutier and the EPIK people from orientation told us we are suppose to get it regardless if we stay or not. I am not sure who to contact in EPIK about the problem.

You are supposed to get it whether you travel or not. Call the foreign teacher coordinator at POE. County bureaucrats sometimes misinterpret things like that and will not listen to reason from below. Make the call and let the spanking fall from above.

Your director (supervisor?) is misinformed. You need to contact your area coordinator.

The expiry date you need to be concerned about is the one on your ARC.

Irrelevant. You are to receive that allowance when you complete your contract. Period. Travel plans and/or future employment elsewhere in korea have no bearing whatsoever.

Also, as mentioned above, check the expiry date on your ARC. If your ARC expires before your contract end date, you need to go to immigration and get an 'extension of sojourn' to remain legal and be able to complete your contract . Call the English immi line for more info: dial 1345

Did you specify that you were switching to GEPIK? The labor board is also an option if that fails, but I would try to contact EPIK higher ups first.

The foreign supervisor told me there is no one higher than her that I can contact. I think I may have to contact the EPIK directors or someone in Gangown-do that is in charge of everything. I plan to leave Korea before the expiration to go on vacation. I am using my vacay days to leave my contract early but I have to make sure that they will not screw me of my severance payment.

HAHAHAHAHA. Sounds like she's worried. Yes, call the provincial office. There's always someone higher up.

Very troubling. They CAN screw you out of your exit allowance AND severance if you do this. They can require that you be in korea on the last day of your contract to be considered as successfully completing your contract and receiving those benefit payments. You may want to consider changing your plans unless you want to be out millions of won.

Can I come back a day or two before my contract ends and still be ok. That is why I am worried about them screwing me over. But I am not sure who to contact and where to find their information. Does anyone know the headquarters for EPIK or Gangwon-do?

That should be fine, but you still need to get your ARC validity date extended to cover up to the end date in your contract. Don't forget your re-entry permit before you travel.

Sorry, dont know the contact info for Gangwondo, but it is someone in that office you will need to speak to - not the EPIK office.
