|
|
A recruiter site stated (dated in June 2010) that state-wide check is required.
Is state criminal background check good enough?
Just want to clarify.
The state check in my state takes 10 days, but the FBI federal check takes 6 weeks.
(I've done both in the past, and I want to speed up the process. Waiting 6 weeks is a bit too long.)
TIA |

According to the Immigration office today:
The new rules for diplomas will go into effect on August 31 or September 1, 2010. You must submit an apostiled copy and they will no longer accept original diplomas.
The new rules for FBI background checks will go into effect in 2011, but they weren't sure of the exact date ... maybe Jan 1, 2011 or ...
These rules are proposed and will become official on July 15, 2010, unless they are rejected before then.
And, of course, being Immgration, this information is subject to change on a moment's notice and on the whim of the person queried. |

Thanks, OTW.

OK, maybe I should just get the FBI check done to be safe, even though this new rule won't take effect until Jan. 1?
Question:
What is the difference between getting documents
1. Notarized
and
2. Apostillied?
Are these 2 the same with a different name, or are they actually, different?
TIA. |

Update:
I just got a state (clean) criminal record check on the internet for $10.00 USD on my credit card.
Must quicker than the FBI 6 weeks you have to wait via snail mail.
Now, I just need to notarize AND/OR??? apostille.
Do I have to do both? |

An apostille is an internationally recognized authentication of a notarization. In most states in the U.S. it's done by the Secretary of State's office. Check your secretary of state's web site for details. |

Yes you do both. You get the notarization. Then the apostille basically just recognizes that notarization as legit in the international community.
Hopefully your online check works out. It better be on an official state looking letter head. |

I don't think that an internet print out is valid. The background check needs to be notarized and then have an apostille put on it. |

I dont think an internet print out will do the trick either but who knows...my "official" background check (from the state of Illinois) literally looked like someone had hit "print screen" on one of those old telnet email programs.
All it had was my name and "no record". There was no state seal, no letterhead, signature or anything. And since I was the one who had it notarized with my own signature, I probably could have just typed the damn thing myself and no one would have known the wiser. |

Same here, mine was from IL. I then had to get it
notarised
authentificated
apostillised
Have fun. Took me three times just for the State Police to notarise it
How in the world did you notarise it yourself? |

Well, I didnt notarize it myself, but I wrote a sentence on it that bascially said "this document is telling the truth" and then signed it and a notary notarized MY signature, as opposed to the actual background check.
That was apparently all they needed at the Secretary of State's office to apostille it.... |

yep because the Sec of State is basically just saying that the notary is registered. |

It's a little concerning to me that the new fbi check rules take effect in 2011. I wonder if despite having already paid for my state check, I will have to turn around and pay for an fbi check in early 2011? |
