Yes, for a very long time? The article said she could face up to one year in jail. So why not make that a choice instead of "a very long time?" |

I don't care if she goes to prison or not really - probably rather she didn't as it won't actually serve any purpose. However she should definitely be banned from ever teaching again. |

At my high school for example there were always rumours flying of the biology teacher sleeping with one of the 16 yr old girls. |

I don't think it's that common if you consider the number of schools, students and teachers in a particular country. Saying that, in my High School we knew teachers were having affairs with each other. I remember our music teacher breaking up the vice-principals marriage. And years before I entered that school supposedly a former vice-principal married a student mere months after she graduated. |

At my small-town high school, the chemistry teacher/basketball coach (male) was romantically involved with a grade 11 student. No real scandal ever became of it and the two eventually married and had twins. A couple years later, however, scandal erupted when she cheated on him with a then grade 11 kid who was presumably a student of said chem teacher and definitely on the basketball team! Now those two are married and have custody of the kids! |

Female teachers having affairs with male students is always less serious than male teachers having affairs with female students. There's a perfectly mundane reason for the double standard - please don't make me spell it out.
Some action has to be taken against this particular teacher because she's broken the law, but a custodial sentence would be ridiculous, I feel.
