I am looking to go to Taiwan for Chusook and was looking for recommendations for places to go and see. I know Taipei is probably another big city so 1 or 2 days max but any other places worth going to. Also, any hostel recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Very Happy

I'd highly recommend Taroko National Park (especially Taroko Gorge, and the water sheet cave within). I usually don't visit nature areas when traveling, but it was really fun.

The Lonely Planet describes how to get to the water sheet cave - though based on their description, I don't think they actually went there themselves. The inaccuracy in their description made for half the fun! (seriously)

I'd second the national park, it really is beautiful.

Hualien is a great place to use as a base for exploring the gorge and surrounding areas. You can rent scooters /motorbikes there and easily explore the east coast.

We stayed at Amigos hostel in Hualien, its a great place with lots of information.

Its listed on this Wiki page.
Best get booking your flights soon....China Airlines are offering a return for 350,000won during this time.

Another great place is

will be having a stop over in taiwan.

on my way to australia 5 hours, on my way back 7 hours.

i know the airport is far outside of the city. does it really take more than two hours to get to taipeh from the airport?
any recommendations as to what to do and what to see there for the short amount of time i have?
quite aware of the tower, however, i was hoping to check out some other sights that arent so popular.
also, on my way back to seoul my stop over is very early in the morning. was thinking about going to a hot spring.. any ideas which would be closest to the airport/ the nicest?

i do speak chinese, so communication wouldnt be a problem. just drop me a name of the sight and ill get there.

thanks Smile

This is in Taipei, but be sure to go to the original Din Tai Fung. It is not overrated and is certainly the best of the chain of acclaimed restaurants.

This may be a wee bit far for you - it depends on your mode of transport.

Longshan temple is also worth a visit (Taipei)-

And also

I think the trip from airport took 1hr and dropped me off right outside Taipei main train station.

I am headed to Taiwan in August. A friend recommended Hengchun/Kenting in the far south. You can find info online. Besides a beautiful stretch of beach, there is also a national park. Also, he recommended Hualien on the east coast to check out. These places are accessible with the high-speed train. There are good buses. Also, shared taxis are possible, with a 90-minute ride costing about 50 USD divided by 4 passengers. I picked hostels off of hostel internet sites. Enjoy!

Hualien has some nice places to eat if you can find them.

Ask some foreigners about "The White Sign" and they might know what you're talking about. Foreigners call it that because there's no English on their sign. And the last time I was there (quite a while ago), I only saw a yellow sign. Awesome guotie, beef wraps, sweet and sour chicken, tofu dishes, etc. Get free tea and usual get local fruit after your meal. Seedless watermelon! Ask about breakfast shops and wonton soup shops. Good indian wraps there, too. Cheap. Mutton, chicken and beef. Place was run by a Pakistani guy married to a local.
