Yeah, I know. They'll go back to being war mongers once Newt is president, but still.. Pat Buchanan is interviewed here too and Ron Paul is mentioned. I do hope the neo-cons power is declining. Though I've been burned by Hope before. |

Another two, I should have said. As if the Democrats want anything different...
Quiz:
Who voted with the Republicans to start this war?
Who voted with the Republicans to fund this war?
Who is in power now and has not ended the war?
(Hint: all the answers are the same.) |
I don't disagree w/ any of that. I've actually voted 3rd party in America most of my life so far. Obviously the Democrats are basically "Republican lite." Still I'd take that over Bush/Cheney, McCain/psycho bitch, and whatever asswipes they come up w/ next time. |
So you switched from 3rd party to Dem? We need people to go the other way. And I'm afraid your attitude only leads to progressively worse administrations, the rationale being, "I'll vote for the guy who's only twice as bad, not 3x."
Furthermore, I don't even think you are right about that. Often, Dems get away with stuff under "liberal' cover we'd never let Reps get away with. The examples that come to mind are from the Clinton admin during which both welfare and habeas corpus were effectively ended. A Rep would have been roasted in the media had he tried that. |

America was going downhill since the 1980s under Reagan. The extreme amount of deregulation led to the S&L and then the bank crises we have.
There should have been proper controls. I don't really like either party, to be frank. These banks basically have been bailed out with our money, and, on top of that, they have the nerve to charge consumers all kinds of crazy fees. The Republican Party has pretty much due its greed and desire to turn the clock back to 1929 has damaged the US. My father, an economist, didn't think Reagan's policies or Supply Side Economics would lead to any good. |

What do you mean go back to being? They're still warmongers now, they just have an interest in deceiving the American people into thinking otherwise now so they can bash Obama for (unwisely) standing by George W. Bush's wars and claim they represent an alternative. It's all just part of a larger maneuver to take Republican failings and dump them on the Democrats in the public eye.
I won't be surprised when Americans fall for it. |

I'm trying to make the best of a short respite from vile rhetoric from people with whom I'm supposed to agree.

Yes.

I don't know how the wars are going down in middle America. I have some Rush-Palin-Kristol members of my family and they've done a 180 on the wars. They're all about the economy and debt now. I don't know how much of that is tribalism but it is there. |

Yeah I fully understand the "lesser of two evils" argument. It's still evil! However imagine Republicans trying to handle the economic crisis. Imagine a widened war into Iran. Imagine Palin as VP. Imagine a war for "maybe 1,000" years in Iraq in the words of McCain, whereas Obama will be bringing some troops back. Imagine INCREASED deregulation and even laxer standards whereas now the Senate may well pass the most comprehensive economic regulatory bill since the Great Depression. I have no illusions that the Democrats are nothing more than a slight buffer against the insanity on the right. I can guarantee you though that for about 95% of Americans, Democrats are ALWAYS better when it really comes down to it. |

I agree 100%. America was a much stronger country in the 60s and 70s. That was the apex of our power really. We had extreme economic power and a large and well off middle class. Reagan came in and decided running up the debt and deficit and extreme military-industrial spending would be fun, deregulating everything in sight, and leading to short term profits and chaos. And EVERY president since has more or less followed suit. And yeah the ethos of GWB was to systematically dismantle FDR's legacy, as Reagan had already started. |

Reagan, unfortunately, will forever be contaminated with supply-siderism. But the initial phases of his reforms were good. His reform of the tax code was necessary, and necessary again now. But his legacy is mixed. Iran Contra, the War on Drugs, high deficits all obscure the fact that he (but also Volcker) turned America out of a recession. I don't agree with Adventurer's nostalgia for big government. The War on Poverty, to take one example, was a wasteful failure.
Still, perhaps the best post-WWII President was Dwight Eisenhower, followed closely by Bill Clinton (Clinton's foreign policy mistakes mar his legacy, but he notably managed to avoid quagmires). |

I will imagine no such things. I'd never vote for a Republican. (Remember, Ron Paul is not really one.) The only hope is outside the mainstream.

Then there is no hope because your views will never be electable on a wide scale. However there is a matter of scope and relative differences between the two parties that is significant. You can play a role influencing these parties and who is elected or you can hang to your fringe and have no real say. |
