I'm on a C4 visa, working a camp for the upcoming month.

I just received my certificate of admission to a Korean university to study Korean.

Immigration told me I'll have to do another Visa run to change C4 to a D4 student visa. I already did a Visa run to get my C4 last week, and would really like to avoid the expense of doing two runs in one month.

Did I get the right answer from immigration? Did some of you folks do it differently?

Thanks in advance!

Immigration is always correct, even when they are wrong, and they often are.

Your best bet is to revisit and speak with another immigration official to try to work out the details.

Why would you trust people on an anonymous message forum (who are not the ones who will get into trouble if they give you wrong advice) vs the government agency responsible for signing off on your work? Even if somebody else did it differently it doesn't mean that their circumstances were the same as yours.

If Immigration told you what to do, then you should check again with them (to make sure) and then do it.

ESLCafe tells me the breadth of possibilities and immigration tells me which ones apply to me.

Users here, like T-J and Ttompatz, for example, often are better informed and have more experience than Korean immigration officers.

I dont know if this helps but a friend of mine was on an E2 then applied for a D2 visa to study at a university in Seoul. Got the paperwork and went to the local immigration office. Had to supply bank account details that show they had 10,000,000won in the account.

I don't know the policy of transfering from a C visa to a D visa is the same or different but I would get a second opinion because on a D visa you are paying money into the Korean economy - tuition fees etc - so they want to make the process easier and encourage foreign students into the system.

Immigration is like a woman, they're right, even when they're wrong.

Actually, outside of a very few posters here, ESL Cafe gives you interpretations, opinions and rants....

As much as Tom and TJ know, many immigration officers know more about issues specific to immigration...just saying...

I will always defer to the guy behind the desk (since he is the one who actually makes the decision - not me).

BUT,

When you actually go to change your status, ask again if you can do a "change in status of sojourn" instead of leaving the country to obtain a new visa.

Things have been known to happen.

Sounds good, guys. I'll try it and report back (end of Aug).

And you know about issues specific to running a hagwon, and take a lot more effort to answer people's related questions than any government officer I've ever met in Korea.

Sure, you guys don't get the daily briefing bulletins in your inbox, but I learn a lot more a lot faster and in a lot more detail from you folks than I do from immi/labor/1330.

tsteele,

As long as you get the information you need and that this information is accurate all is well.

I think you confused me with TJ however as he is the one who knows about running a hakwon.

In theory it should be possible to make that visa change, but I've never seen anyone do it successfully. They got frustrated and went back home in between or never did change the visa.

Good luck!
