if you had to pick one and do it right, where would you go: some island in the bay, or somewhere near chiang mai?
here's some of the things i'm looking forward to:
-food/cooking
-nature
-seeing things with a motorbike
-swimming
-sun
-not moving a lot
-intoxication
-not spending a lot
what do you think? |

If I ever go back to Thailand, I'll be going to Krabi or maybe Koh Chang over by Cambodia. Maybe a night or two on Koh Phi Phi Don.
Not spending a lot? Stay away from Koh Samui then. Phuket can be done on a shoestring but there are so many scams, you can't avoid them all. |

I tried squeezing in northern and southern Thailand in 10 days and I felt a little rushed. A friend of mine who I was with there ended up staying for about a month and had a great backpacking in northern Thailand.
Anyway, I dont know about swimming in northern Thailand (and obviously the beach is in the south) but you can experience everything else up there especially nature. I took a bamboo raft down a river (slowly) and it was one of the most relaxing things I've ever done.
People in the north are a lot more laid back than people in the south, but the poster above me is right....they are scams everywhere. |

The south is seriously wet in October. Chiang Mai is also wet, but not as wet as the south. Early Oct is when the serious floods usually hit (north and south). Late October may see some decent weather in the north.
I would say go to Bali instead. October is dry time in Bali. |

so the first week of october is not the best time to bum around on a motorbike, huh? sucks thats the only time i get off.
flight to bali looks too pricey. anybody been to sumatra? i hear theyve got mushrooms and no tourists. |

Last year I went to Bohol in October. The weather was great.
Bohol fits most of what you want.

I did both last year, spending the entire month of October in the Land of Smiles.
I recommend you head up to Chiang Mai because it has the best nature, especially to motorbike around, lots of great cooking classes in the city, sun everyday as when it rains it dumps and clears amazingly fast, swimming pools easy to find, and given it is indeed CHEAPER up north than down south, I mean, half price like cheaper, you can get a guesthouse like http://www.laithai.com/ for 500 baht/night in October (I stayed there for over a week) with outdoor pool and great central location. Lots of bars to get intoxicated in, though if getting drunk and swimming are your highest priority then down south edges out the north. But for everything else you list I recommend you head for Chiang Mai.
There are overnight well air conditioned first rate luxury class buses from Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin if you wanna do the coast before zipping up north for less than 1000 baht all in. |
