Just wondering if there is anyone else who works for a company rather than a hogwan? It's pretty entertaining reading about all of your experiences, but I guess it's pretty different being in being in an office all day instead of a hogwan classroom. I work for an online English company here...and I am soooo bored actually. I got stuck with a lot of phone English for most of the day. If it weren't for Dave's, I might go crazy!!!

Heehee...kind of funny that I came all the way to Korea just to talk on the phone. People back home actually ask me why I couldn't just do that from my own country. Oh well...at least I get to have an interesting overseas experience...that is, when I'm not stuck in my cubicle.

I also work at a company. I have about 4 classes on my schedule every day, and 3 of those are one-on-one with executive members who speak English very well. They cancel all the time for meetings and business trips. This week I have only 2 classes and that's not unusual at all!
I get paid 2M to be here from 8am-3pm, Monday-Friday, plus housing, free lunches, free transportation to and from work. After 3pm I get 20 000won OT, which is alright. Of course they're screaming for English classes here so I can sometimes make 2.8M and still be home by 6pm.
I get pretty bored as well. I try to always have a book or two kicking around my desk, I also study Turkish and a little Korean, and then of course there's Dave's and all kinds of other mindless entertainment on the net.

I get petty bored as well. I try to always have a book or two kicking around my desk, I also study Turkish and a little Korean, and then of course there's Dave's and all kinds of other mindless entertainment on the net.

I've got a nice gig right now, but yours beats the pants off of mine!

It gets better. If I have no morning classes I just sleep in and take a taxi. A taxi from my house to my company is about 8000won, but once in a while it's worth it to sleep in. And I finish every day at 2pm, although technically I'm paid to be here till 3pm, I usually leave. So many days I'm only here for 2 or 3 hrs.

I'm not trying to brag. Actually I'm mentioning it now because I'll soon be facing the dilemma of whether to stay here or move on. I love my job but I've lived in this city for 2 years. Anyone been to Gumi? After 2 years there's really not much to do here. I really want to move to Seoul.
However, I can see myself working 6 hrs a day in a hagwan, surrounded by screaming kids, pulling my hair out and kicking myself for giving up this job! Decisions, decisions....

Wow Howard Roark! You have a great setup there! I have to be here every day from 9am-6pm, and I'm not really doing anything for at least half of the day...maybe more. I pay for my own lunch and transportation, and now they've asked me to start teaching conversation classes two days a week from 6-7pm because most of the employees here can't speak much English (in an English education company!). I don't mind it too much, but I feel pretty mentally sluggish after 9 hours of boredom. I'm the only foreigner here, so these classes have at least helped to break the ice between us all a little bit. I also study my own stuff...Korean and French...but...ahh..I wish I had your schedule! I'm counting the weeks until I can get out of here and get something a little more dynamic and exciting. In the meantime...thank God for the Internet.
