is there such a thing? If not what would be the repercussions of leaving a year long contract half way?

Yes 6 month contracts do exist. Some school do them. Most school do prefer a year. The consequences of signing a six month is you get a one way plane ticket or a visa trip to Japan and that is it. And of course you can forget getting severence. But a six month contract is a good way to start and if you like the school you can renew and deal for a return ticket home and severence.

The consequences for leaving 6 months into a year contract can vary. But the most common problem is a school paid money for a two way airplane ticket and you want to leave and you feel you deserve the ticket back home free and clear. If you leave at 6 months they will try and recoup losses for the plane ticket - holding off the last months pay.

Other concerns is recruiter fees. School pay a million for you for a year and they get you for 6 months. They want 500,000 back.

The repercussions against you would probably depend on the employer. The repercussions against the rest of us: It would contribute to the climate here of bosses being overly suspicious of their employees and not trusting them to honor their contractual obligations.

Why are they so suspicious and untrusting already? Because a lot of people do what you are considering and sign a year contract, only to leave before they have fulfilled what they committed to. Some have good reasons for leaving (as often times it's the school that doesn't fulfill it's end of the bargain), but sadly, many do not.

I hope you don't take this personally, but if you are planning to sign a year's contract in Korea with no intention of staying the whole year, please don't come here.

You obviously did not read my post.

I didn't say that one should not leave even if the job sucks. And I didn't unequivocally say that she shouldn't come here, either. It just makes things harder for us when so many people sign 1 year contracts with a plan to leave after a few months even before they get here. If you come and you get screwed, then leave. That's fine: I have no objection to that.

But when you sign a contract knowing full well at that time that you have no intention of honoring the agreement regardless of how well you're treated, then the person who replaces you when you leave will have to live under the microscope of a paranoid boss who is terrified of having another teacher pull a runner on him for absolutely no reason. And for me, it's not even about morality: I just don't want to be that guy with the boss's video camera hidden in my apartment because of stunts like that pulled by previous teachers. Do you?

thanks for the input! first of all i am a he. second of all the reason that i need a 6 month contract is that my girlfriend is currently teaching in korea and i want a 6 month contract so that we would be done at the same time.

on the other hand i don't to limit my options as far as job oppurtunites go you know what i'm saying? I have no intention of screwing anyone over as far as compensation or anything like goes so i seem to be facing a bit of a dilemna.

Six month contracts ar becoming more prevelant within EFL teaching in Korea and there are many employers that will look at a 6 month contract favourably. When you make initial contact with a potential employer be straight up about what you want and why. An E2 is still issued for the twelve months and is then subsequently cancelled. At my previous school, we worded the contract as 6 months with a renewal option for a further 6 months. Immigration had no problems with this, at least in Ulsan. Smile

actually Clamance, i try and spend most of my nights in yokwans with some young lady. so i dont really worry about the camera in the apartment bit a whole lot. of course the best part about yokwans are when the ladies pay!! makes it more satisfying

Yes, it is possible to sign six a month contract as per I've just signed one after negotiating a deal that was beneficial for both parties involved. You can always renegotiate if it's an agreeable relationship. I mean, is one or two million won really worth the possible misery of being locked in a one year contract. Remember to always go for a higher monthlyand a blocked schedule ; ) because you're not going to get the "so-called" perks.

I've seen 6-month contracts. I was offered a choice recently and I took the 12-month one. The shorter contract offered only one-way airfare reimbursement instead of roundtrip and there was no severance bonus - Korean law does not require it for employees who work less than 12 months.

I didn't see the point, since the 12-month contract had suffient allowance for either side to give 6 weeks notice at any time and the same provisions applied : if I stayed less than 6 months I'd forego the airfare and of course no severance.

I've never known anyone who personally experienced this, but from what I've heard, it has happened before.

does anyone know of any schools/recruiters that look favourably on 6 month conracts? I'm specifically looking in the Sanbon/Anyang area. I know this makes things difficult but any help would be greatly appreciated!!
