Any Winnipegers here?

I'm considering looking at Winnipeg when I go back. I know what the weather is like in the winter in the prairies but I've always been curious what the city is like to live in.

I wouldn't say Vientiane was the most horrible city I've ever been to. Sure it was a bit of a let down seeing so many temples (wats) that weren't all that different than those in neighboring Thailand, (with Pha That Luang being a notable exception.)

'Patuxay' (the "vertical runway" Arc de Triumph copy, allegedly constructed with funds siphoned off from the airport construction fund) was worth a quick look too. Also, the sunset bar overlooking the Mekong River is only a short ride out of town:

I HATE L.A.

"WHATDOYOUMEANYOUDON'TLIKETHELAKERS?! EVERYONE LOVES THE LAKERS! WHY IS KOBE'S FACE EVERYWHERE IF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THE LAKERS BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!"

The city is also terrible for pedestrians. Good luck to you if you take the wrong turn on foot OR in a car.

Obviously, it's nowhere near the worst city in the world on paper, but out of all he places I've had the "pleasure" of visiting--L.A. has left me with the most negative impression.

Try living a two hour drive away. What I don't like about LA is it has a west coast NYC arrogance about it. "Korean/Chinese/et al food outside of LA? pshaw!" "To live and die in LA!" and so on.

However, it has a few gleams of nice spots. I like the sleaze of East Hollywood and Venice Beach, and Santa Monica isn't bad either. San Pedro is a nice little spot. But in a city as big as LA, those are like needles in a haystack - and a long drive through non-rush-hour-but-still-too-heavy traffic.

The biggest ain't always the best.

I'm glad we don't have to deal with as many Raiders fans anymore, at least.

Haha, I did! My alma mater is UC Irvine; and I know exactly what you're talking about.

I maybe have already posted in this thread in which case I probably said LA. Worst city in the US. And since I hold the US to a higher standard than poorer, smaller and/or less-developed countries, I'd rank it as the worst in the world.

I spent all of 10 minutes in the LA Greyhound terminal, in Nov 2008, & went straight to Yosemite for 3 days, then 3 days in San Francisco instead. Seems like I made a good decision. I've also heard Venice Beach is worth a quick look. But Yosemite wins hands down imho.

Dude, I think he meant 2 hours in a bad direction, not a good one. As in the Central Valley, Inland Empire, or desert. Or maybe those areas are what you're refering to as well. Irvine and OC aren't that bad. Not exactly exciting perhaps, but certainly not awful.

The problem is, as nukeday noted, there are some bright spots, but they're a needle in a haystack. I used to hate the place, but after living in SoCal for a couple years (San Diego to be exact) I came to like certain parts of LA. And if you're a tourist, you're probably not going to find those spots, and if you live there, it is pretty difficult to live in one of those good areas and also not have some commute that makes you want to shoot yourself.

Is Winnipeg just a bigger version of, say, Regina? I hated winter in Regina, It's just as long as brutal in Manitoba as Saskatchewan. But, 500, 000 people in Winnipeg - not a small Canadian city. What's the culture like?

So it's a rough town.

Not as violent as Vancouver.

I love ghetto places. Has anyone been to Compton? Going to LA for a few days next month, thinking about taking a gander.

I've been to Compton. There's nothing there save a bunch of small and relatively run-down homes and a lot of electric power wire.

Go to Crenshaw instead. It has the soul food restaurants and the Living Room, a nice karaoke bar with great singers (but go on weekends).
