Has anyone out there shipped their mtn bike home and if so, how did you do it. Packed in a box its roughly 170cm by 100cm by 30cm and weighs 15 kgs... My Korean friends called Asiana Cargo and KAL Cargo and was quoted something like 400- 500 US dollars to ship via them. I even tried the Post Office to see if I could do it by boat, but they said the total dimensions on the bike were too big and can't do it seamail.
Looking for a relatively ( 100$++) cheap way to get it home- am travelling right after the contract is over. Anyone have any experience with this. I live in Busan. Thanks! |

Well, to get my bike TO Korea, I picked up a (cardboard) bike box from a local bike store and confirmed that the airline I was taking (Air Canada) would substitute one of my 2 standard pieces of check-in baggage for a bike box free of charge (which they did). I imagine you should start by trying to do the same thing:
1. Contact the airline you'll be flying with and find out if they'll accept a bike box as one of your pieces of check-in baggage (if you're short on baggage think about this: mailing your winter clothes, extra shoes, Hello Kitty collection etc. home via the post office will certainly be a LOT cheaper than trying to ship/mail a bike home, as would paying for an extra piece of check-in baggage with the airline).
2. Go to your local bike store and scrounge a bike box off of them. EDIT: sorry, I see you mention that you've already got it in a box.
Of course you could always try selling your bike in Korea before you leave... |

I'm not going back to the States directly, I'm travelling for a couple of months first and don't want to lug it around, otherwise I'd take it as my luggage. Thanks anyways.. |

Yeah, I kind of thought that might be the case... are you going to be coming back through Korea on your way to the States? Get someone to store it for you until then. If not I think you're back to selling it or paying at least a few hundred thousand to get it shipped home. |
